Animal Profile

Skyler

Hello, my name is Skyler. My animal id is #223247. I am a desexed female silver tortoiseshell calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months old.

Skyler is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center when staff have to provide basic animal care daily and she may display conflicted behaviors when engaging with attention during staff interactions or socialization. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. Meet Skyler! Skyler is a sweet and affectionate kitty who's looking for a calm, understanding home. She may start off perched in a high spot like the top of her den, but she'll quickly come forward when called, ready to say hello. Skyler enjoys gentle petting on her cheeks, head, and back, and she often greets affection with soft purrs and a happy, high tail. She has a playful side too-she loves treats and catnip, which make great tools for bonding and enrichment. Skyler tolerates being picked up, though she may squirm a bit and prefers having the option to come and go at her own pace. Skyler does have a history of biting or scratching when startled or upset, so she'll do best with an experienced cat guardian who understands feline body language and can give her space when needed. A quiet, predictable, adult-only home environment will help her feel safe and thrive. With patience and respect, Skyler promises to be a loyal, loving companion.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/4/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT: Skyler is a shy, calm, and sweet cat with a bite/scratch history. She was hiding in the den crouched down with her head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and eyes when removing the den cover. She sniffs and accepts treats offered and head bunts for petting. She leans in hard for cheek rubs and looks back at the assessor's hand when stroking her body. The assessor coaxes her with more petting and treats to the front of the kennel. She continues to head bunt for petting, lean in for cheek rubs, and now raises her hips and tail in the air when stroking her body. During pick up, she is calm but tenses up and pushes against the assessor's body when held and hugged for 5 seconds. After placing her back down, she continues to appreciate more petting and cheek rubs. 5/9/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT: Skyler is a shy, calm, and sweet cat with a bite/scratch history. Skyler was on top of the den, but quickly came down and forward when called. She appeared to be very sweet and enjoyed and accepted all petting on the cheeks head and along the back while purring with a high tail that was slightly pile erected at the base. She was fairly calm when picked up, although she squirm slightly, but remained in the assessor‘s arms briefly before jumping back into the kennel where she remained calm and sweet. She loves treats and enjoys catnip. She is a history of biting and scratching in the home when startled or becoming upset. 5/13/25 FB32 Previous reports from ACS regarding Skyler being protective of her belongings during cleaning and feeding; she will escalate to hissing, growling, or swatting when reaching around in her kennel. When removing her litter box, she lunged (spit and swat) forward. When adding a kennel tag to notify staff of Skyler's protective behavior and for her to keep her double kennel housing, she stepped forward from the other side of the kennel to hiss at the handler. 5/18/25 Vol. Skyler was up at the front of the condo, tail up, ears forward, looking interested in attention.  She responds happily to dry treats, eating quickly and looking up for more. She allows petting all over her head and body for long periods, leaning into cheek scritches and ear-rubs. During our time, she did not get over-stimulated, but this has been noted in her records. 6/5/25 ACFR During cleaning and feeding time on 6/4/25 and 6/5/25, Skyler hisses, lunges, and swats hard when staff reach close around her or her belongings in kennel. Similarly reported behavior above from 5/13/25. 6/6/25 ACFR She was on the right side kennel. When unlocking the door on the left side kennel, she jumps forward to swat at my hand but is blocked by the door. When opening the left door to give her food, she rushes to the portal door, short stress meows, and swats near my hand. After giving her some time, she retreats and climbs on top of the den to watch as I continue cleaning her kennel.

VOCAL:: Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,People oriented,Curious

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

Recommendations comments:: No other cats due to possible redirected aggression. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Skyler is a social, calm, and sweet cat with a bite/scratch history and other potential challenges that will need to be addressed. She was on the left side kennel, immediately rushes to the right side kennel, and reaches her paw through the door to solicit attention. When opening the door, she hovers over the front entrance and curiously scans the environment. She is easily refocused onto the assessor with a soft body and eyes when petting her head. She sniffs, rubs her face, and leans in hard for cheek rubs. Then, she walks out of the kennel and is calm when stroking her body, but tenses up, rolls on her back, and respectfully kicks the assessor's hand away. After she crouches down, the assessor reaches around her to attempt pick up. Skyler remains calm and tense when returned back into the kennel. After placing her back down, she walks to the front, sniffs the assessor's hand, rubs her face, and leans in for more cheek rubs. After closing the door at the end of the interaction, she climbs on the door to solicit more attention. Skyler interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center and reported in the previous home, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who are well counseled in Fear Free handling techniques and best practices and her tendency to become aroused and escalate in response to being startled with environmental triggers like loud, sudden noise or movement. It is difficult for us to reconcile her reported behavior in the home with her behavior in the shelter (due to neighboring cats that may potentially stress her out), but these differences have been noted with other cats on occasion.
