Animal Profile

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Hello, my name is Pineapple Upside Down Cake . My animal id is #244794. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/17/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Pineapple Upside Down Cake is on the at-risk list due to his behavior history. He has warmed up to staff using treats to build a positive association; however, he displays signs of overstimulation or high arousal and has a severe bite/scratch history where he jumps to attack or grab hold the previous owner's upper body, arms, legs, and back, and it was difficult to remove the cat off their body. Due to this behavior history, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am not one to sit still and will love interactive playtime in my new home! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am really treat motivated. You can use treats to teach me new things! Pineapple Upside Down Cake has a behavioral history that precludes placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. A volunteer writes: Pineapple Upside Down Cake is an adorable, five-year-old orange tabby. He has a beautiful face and sweet green eyes with which he gazed at me softly when he came forward and parked himself loaf-style to get a better look at me. He was a quick study with a squeeze-up and definitely enjoys his food. He seems like he'd be a willing playmate, but proved a bit afraid of the red laser and the cat dancer. I think both were foreign to him. Others have reported that he can get overstimulated. In my estimation, he's also easily scared. Pineapple talked back to me a bit when I started to sing to him, which I found pretty winning. I wonder if other visitors would have the same experience.

She received multiple scratches all over her body from her neck, her back, all down her left arm, both sides of her legs. This resulted in her having open scratch wounds and excessively bleeding. The owner had to go into the hospital to receive medical attention for her wounds.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Pineapple Upside Down Cake was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment. On 2/17/26 at around 3 am this morning, the adopter, was trying to take Pineapple off of the bed as he was previously having high arousal. When she had moved him off of the bed, Pineapple went to the ground and immediately jumped back on her bed. He would then launch himself on the adopter, attaching himself on her neck with his claws out and breaking skin. The adopter would roll around in an attempt to shield her face away from Pineapple, but he would jump on her back and scratched her there. The adopter got herself out of the bed; Pineapple would then attach himself on her left arm and wrist, receiving the most damage in that area. Her skin was severely scratched, and she was bleeding out a lot. The adopter would then walk to the bathroom with Pineapple; she got him off of her arm and he started to crawl down her legs. He struggled as the adopter could not get him off of her. Eventually she was able to get the cat off of her, shutting the door immediately to keep him there. The adopter decided to receive medical care at a hospital where she received a tetanus shot and antibiotics.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 1/5/26 Pineapple Upside Down Cake is a very sweet and food-motivated cat who was at the front and immediately ate treats and enjoyed all petting, leaning in nicely for cheek rubs, arching his back for lower back petting, and generally being sweet and affectionate. He was calm when picked up and held, remained so, and sat back down in the kennel, then continued to eat treats while enjoying petting. 1/4/26 FB73 Pineapple is laying in his den, body and eyes neutral as the handler approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he softly meows, exiting the den and coming to the front of the kennel to greet the handler. He head bunts their hands, leaning into and allowing all petting. Pineapple is able to be picked up but immediately tenses and begins growling when picked up. When placed back into his kennel, he continues to head bunt and lean in for further petting. 2/24/26 FB73 Pineapple is standing at the front of the kennel, eyes wide and pupils dilated, head bunting and leaning his body against the kennel door and meowing at the handler as they approach. He allows petting on the head and cheeks, leaning in as he is pet before quickly whipping his head back. The handler closes the kennel door, and Pineapple remains at the front, continuing to head bunt and lean into petting on the head and cheeks through the door, not escalating further. 3/1/26 FB32 Hiding in den curled up, pokes head out, eagerly rushes to the front to accept treats offered. Welcomes petting on the head and cheeks, raises hips and tail up when stroking body. During pick up, he tenses up a little bit, rests his front limbs on the assessor's arm, and allows petting all over when held for 5 seconds. After placing him back down, he continues to appreciate more treats as a reward. He easily targets his nose to touch my finger for a few repetitions of clicker training. 3/7/26 FB20 Pineapple Upside Down Cake is sleeping on his sherpa blanket. He sniffs handler's finger and allows a little nose boop. He then eats an entire squeeze up as a reward.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Energetic

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Playful,People oriented,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Pineapple is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Pineapple becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Pineapple did not appear to like being picked up during his behavior evaluation. He does allow it and did not escalate but appears uncomfortable, tensing and growling when picked up and held. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home. Pineapple is an active cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct his energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Pineapple engaged and exercise his brain in addition to his body. During his time in the shelter, he appears to be highly treat-motivated and would engage in a few repetitions of clicker training!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to a bite/scratch history, an adult only home is recommended.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pineapple is at the front of the kennel, eyes wide and pupils dilated, meowing and head bunting the kennel door to solicit attention as he is approached. When the kennel door is opened, he head bunts the assessor's hand, allowing and leaning into all petting for several seconds before tensing and beginning to tail flick. Petting is stopped and the assessor offers him treats which he begins to eat immediately. Petting is attempted again and he continues to lean in, head bunt, and allow all petting. When pickup is attempted, Pineapple tenses and begins to low growl. When he is placed back in the kennel he remains at the front and allows more petting on the head and cheeks but does begin to tail flick. Pineapple has a behavioral history that precludes placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
