Animal Profile

Teddy

Hello, my name is Teddy. My animal id is #228760. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 6/26/2025.

Teddy is on the at-risk due to behavior concerns in the care center and in his previous home. Teddy has not been acclimating well to the care center environment, despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Throughout the day, Teddy will rebound of his kennel door, vocalize and hypersalivate leaving visible saliva marks across his kennel. Teddy in his previous home is noted to have poor bite inhibition and become mouthy during play, leaving bruising on previous owners left arm as well as breaking skin. Teddy is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate. Medically, Teddy is apparently healthy.

If you're looking for a lovable companion who's equal parts couch potato and playmate, Teddy might just be your perfect match! This sweet boy is happiest wherever his people are-whether it's snuggling up on the couch for a nap or tagging along for a walk around the block. Teddy is a social butterfly who loves meeting new people and isn't shy about showing his affectionate side. His previous owner's favorite thing? How incredibly snuggly he is! He'll happily follow you from room to room, always ready for a cuddle or a quick game of tug-of-war. Teddy knows his basics like "sit," "wait," and "heel," and he's especially motivated by treats (peanut butter is a big hit!). He was walked 3-4 times a day for about 15-30 minutes, and while he may pull a little on leash, he's always excited to get out and explore. He does fine in the car and loves being part of family outings. He's okay with baths and brushing, and while he tried the crate life, he much prefers being out and about with his people. Teddy was fed Royal Canin dry food and will gladly work for snacks-he loves learning and bonding through training. Teddy is looking for a home where he can be the center of attention, get lots of cuddles, and continue being the loving, playful pup he already is. If you've got space on your couch and in your heart, come meet Teddy!

Summary:: **Returned 07/25** According to Teddy's previous owner(s), he will alert bark and pull towards them. 07/07/25 Teddy is introduced to multiple novel male dogs at the gate while off leash at the care center. All three are done on separate occasion. The first interaction Teddy is soft and wiggly, spending most of his time attempting to solicit the attention of the novel male dog, but due to the novel male dog's confliction, he is avoidant. Teddy would remain self-present, as the novel male dog ignores him. On Teddy's second interaction, he is ignored again at the gate. Teddy approaches with a soft body, however, grows nervous as he grows avoidant. Teddy will move away from the gate, displaying a neutral frame. Teddy is fatigued by his third and final greet, unable to focus. at this point Teddy is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 07/06/25 Teddy is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Teddy will approach the gate with a soft frame, standing adjacent to the novel female dog as she stands at a distance, directly in Teddy's sight. Teddy is wiggly, soliciting play by offering play bows and bounces. The novel female dog remains at the gate becoming stiff in frame, displaying a high curved tail, before lunging forward at the gate to snarl at Teddy. Teddy picks up on the social cue, disengaging from the interaction, walking away and seeking attention from the handlers present. The novel female dog is moved away before being taken back to kennel followed by Teddy, concluding the interaction. Due to Doug entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/09/25 Doug is introduced at the gate to a Male greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Doug scents the male greeter dog through the gate as does the greeter dog. Doug appears conflicted as he displays a neutral frame, lip licking and proceeding to displacement scent away from the gate. The male greeter dog will linger behind the gate, remaining self-present, attempting to solicit Doug's attention with paw slaps to the gate. Doug will maintain his distance as the greeter dog becomes frustrated, vocalizing at Doug. Doug stands at a distance hyper-salivating, ignoring the male greeter dog. Doug will seek attention from one of the handlers present, followed by seeking an exit. The male greeter dog is moved away from the gate and Doug is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (1):: 06/08/25 Doug is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Doug will approach the gate with a soft, wiggly body, scenting the greeter dog through the gate. The greeter dog will scent him back, displaying a soft, wiggly body as well. Doug will solicit play by start/stopping at the gate, followed by play bows and bounces. The greeter dog will mirror Doug, catch the zoomies right after and runaround the pen. Doug is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. Doug is now used to greet two novel female dogs at the gate while off leash. Doug presents as disinterested in the first interaction with one of the novel female dogs. He would approach the gate line, body parallel to the gate, as the novel female stands behind the gate facing Doug. With a neutral frame, he scents the novel female dog through the gate, disengaging as he walks away and begins to displace, scenting away from the gate as she offers play bows and bounces. Doug will maintain his distance for the remainder of the time. On his second interaction with the second novel female dog, he appears more interested as he approaches the gate with a softer, wigglier frame. The novel female dog doesn't approach the gate to greet, appearing aloof. Doug will attempt to solicit her attention by vocalizing, but she will displace, scenting away from the gate. As Doug bounces and jumps onto the gate still attempting to solicit her attention, she will maintain her distance from the gate, seeking an exit. Doug is moved away from the gate and both dogs are returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Doug walked into kennel room where multiple MOPs were present and entered kennel without issue. 6/5/25: Teddy is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed and he pulls hard with a tense body and low tail on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding:Teddy consideres toys, treats, and food valuable and he will hover over them.Training should focus on desensitization and counter-conditioning to help him feel safe when people are near his possessions, and to teach him that giving up items leads to positive outcomes.
