Bobo

Hello, my name is Bobo . My animal id is #234764. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 8/21/2025.

Bobo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Bobo in the care center has displayed a high level of dog reactivity, barking, lunging and thrashing on leash in attempts to refocus him or walk him past other dogs making it difficult to walk him safely at times. Bobo is a bit fearful in care, but is social with staff. Medically, Bobo has a wound on his right shoulder.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 58 lbs

Bobo is then introduced at the gate to a novel female dog and as they enter the pen and approach the gate, Bobo exuberantly rushes the gate and begins screeching. Bobo is frustrated due to not being able to make contact, muzzle punching the gate and still screeching. The handler moves Bobo to the side of the pen in order to place a muzzle on him and to where he allows it, remaining still, once on, he paws at it appearing frustrated and uncomfortable. The muzzle is taken off and Bobo is returned to kennel in order to decompress. 08/25/25 Bobo is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Summary (5):: 9/30: Staff report that they were unable to successfully walk Bobo due to his reactivity to other dogs. He was reported to lunge, vocalize, and begin thrashing when the staff member attempted to walk him in the opposite direction. - 9/27/25: Bobo is on his bed as the handler approaches. He stands up, stretching as the handler opens the door. He is leashed with easer and walked to the live room where he is offered snuffle mats and a puzzle toy. At first he is disinterested in the puzzle toy. The handler then tosses some treats to trade for the toy and they make the food more accessible in the puzzle. Bobo begins to understand the puzzle slowly until he is opening the compartments on his own to reach the food. When Bobo finishes the puzzle, he is leashed with ease and returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 9/18/25: Bobo is reported to be highly reactive on leash towards other dogs, head whipping, barking and lunging. 09/16/25 (Trainer Note): Bobo is sitting at the front of his kennel trembling as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Bobo leans into contact from staff with a tucked tail and pinned ears. He continues to tremble as he initially enters the room. Bobo put his front feet up onto the lap of a familiar handler and leans into contact. The handler pets him for a few moments before redirecting him. Bobo is able to shake off and his body language softens. Bobo's tail comes up to a neutral position and he ceases trembling. He engages readily with the various enrichment, orienting towards the handler between items. Handler works with Bobo on take a breath and the 123 game and Bobo participates readily, though he intermittently attempts to solicit contact from the handler. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately down the hallway, barking at a dog from a distance. Bobo enters the kennel without issue and allows the handler to remove the leash.

Summary (6):: 9/12/25: Bobo is sitting upright at the front of his cage. When leashing, he dodges the rope twice but then allows it to happen. In the elevator, Bobo trembles and gets low to the ground as we go to the second floor. Outside, he starts lunging, whining, and barking when seeing other dogs- even from a distance. The handler crosses the street but Bobo remains fixated on other dogs. Bobo searches for other dogs throughout the remainder of the walk. Treats are tossed on the ground but are ignored. When putting Bobo back in the crate, he swiftly goes in and needs no encouragement. 08/27/25: Bobo was brought to the play yard to meet a dummy play dog. Upon spotting the dummy dog, Bobo immediately began screeching while on leash as the handler held him back. Once the gate was opened for Bobo to approach the dummy dog, he moved in with a tense body, placing his paws on the shoulders of the play dog and sniffing it closely. Hackles did not rise during this interaction. A second playmate (a real dog) was then introduced for a gate greeting. Bobo began screeching again and approached the gate for a nose to nose greeting. During this, he displayed mouth chattering, hyper-salivation, and punching his muzzle into the gate. His behavior appeared to be driven by barrier frustration, and he showed signs of being uncertain about how to appropriately play with or approach the other dog. An attempt was made to muzzle Bobo, but due to his heightened frustration and arousal, the session was ended early. Bobo was escorted back to his kennel safely without any further issues. 08/27/25: ACS Staff report that Bobo is highly dog reactive, pulling towards dogs and crying even from a distance. 8/25/25: Bobo is standing at the front of his kennel growling as handler approaches. He begins to whimper as the handler unlocks the door. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken to the yard outside. Along the way, he would pull towards dogs with a tense body while vocalizing. He is unable to be redirected with treats or toys. In the yard, he is able to shake off and would approach the handler and lean in for pets and attention. He would hard stare at dogs as they passed by. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 08/24/25 Bobo is at the front of his kennel displaying a wagging tail as the handler approaches. Initially he is avoidant of the lead, but when the loop of the lead is tossed onto his head, he allows, stepping forward, exiting his kennel. As they enter the hallway, Bobo displays a slight tucked tail, hyper-vigilant of his surroundings. Bobo becomes startled from a loud noise in the hall and will scurry towards the handler, leaning into them. The handler will kneel down and pet him before exiting the facility. Bobo becomes a bit looser as the exiting the building, relieving himself and commencing the walk. When seeing other dogs on a walk with novel handlers, Bobo appears frustrated, pulling in their direction and screeching, irresponsive to treats and a squeaker. Bobo is returned to the facility, entering the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 08/23/25: Bobo is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and walks with a slightly tense frame out to the ramp. Once a dog is in sight on the other side of the fence, Bobo begins to pull back out of lead while thrashing and vocalizing. Handler attempts to distract with a squeaker and treats but he shows no interest. He will stop thrashing once other dog is out of sight and is ushered along to the play yard. He will begin to screech, back out of lead and thrash again as he spots another dog on the corner of the street. Handler ushers him into a play yard and he begins to sniff and explore the space with a tense trembling frame. Bobo takes treats gently from hand and will lean into petting with a slightly loosened frame. When contact stops, he will nudge handler to solicit again. After his session, he is returned to kennel safely. 08/22/25: Bobo is standing at the front of his kennel with a tucked tail and ears back, hard barking at the handler. Once the kennel door is opened, he will retreat to the middle of his kennel, avoiding the leash. The handler will then secure the door inward and leash Bobo overhead, dropping the lead down and around his neck. Once outside, Bobo reacts to the dog-shaped panel on the gate, but when he realizes it is not a real dog, he sniffs and walks away. When passing other dogs, he begins whining, growling, head whipping and trashing pulling in the dog’s direction, attempting to come out of the leash. Bobo will also lunge at birds during the walk. He is then returned to the care center and brought back to his kennel safely without any further issues.

Date of initial:: 8/22/2025

Summary:: ery nervous and shaking at first but warmed up quickly with treats

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bobo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Bobo's fearfulness and reactivity displayed in care, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Single-pet/no dog parks: Due to Bobo's reactivity displayed while in care, we recommend he be the only pet in the home as well as avoiding all dogs parks.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Bobo is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Bobo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bobo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bobo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bobo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Bobo has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking, and growling as well as birds. Bobo may need positive reinforcement and reward-based training to teach him to focus on you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front-clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
