Animal Profile

Da Baby

Hello, my name is Da Baby. My animal id is #157729. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/10/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Da Baby is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He has a severe bite/scratch history and may display signs of fearfulness, overstimulation, or very high energy level in the shelter. When he adjusts to a new environment, he allows petting and attention on his own terms. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful or sensitive cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/14/26 ACFR Da Baby was laying in a loaf position inside his den. When the cover was removed, he stood and stretched, then stared at handler with wide eyes and forward ears. He tentatively ate squeeze up off scratcher tool, his body was stiff and tail curled up around his side, but he seemed to slowly relax with more treats and soft speaking. Da Baby flinched at first then leaned heavily into petting with scratcher tool. He then slowly exited den and enjoyed more full body petting directly from handler. He would occasionally stop and body ripple, turn and eat kibble, then return to purring and head bunting handler with his tail straight up. He would also stop and stare out into the room at other staff walking by and curl his tail tightly around his body. Handler ended interaction due to signs of overstimulation. 2/15/26 ACFR Da Baby immediately exited den when kennel door was opened, coming forward to head bunt handler's hands and eat squeeze up. He leaned into petting on the cheeks with engaged forward ears, soft eyes, forward whiskers, and his tail straight up, but continuously body rippled. As people entered the room and walked by, he froze and hard stared, then continued head bunting. After a few more moments the people in the room began speaking loudly and he fled into his den while hissing. 2/26/26 FB20 Da Baby is inside of his den. When the door opens, he comes out to the front to greet the assessor with forward ears and slightly dilated eyes. He allows all petting but gets occasionally distracted by movement in the room. His tail is midway throughout the interaction. There are no significant signs of overstimulation, when the door is closed he remains at the front. 3/2/26 FB73 Da Baby is at the front of the kennel, leaning his body and rubbing his cheeks against the kennel door to solicit attention. When the kennel door is opened, he allows all petting, leaning in and head bunting as he is pet. Da Baby is able to be pet for a few minutes without issue, his eyes are slightly dilated throughout the interaction, but he does not escalate.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: There is a bite and scratch history. Da Baby has been reported to attack both strangers and people that he knows. Da Baby is an active cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct his energy. It is possible his reported very high energy levels have played a part in his bite and scratch history. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Da Baby engaged and exercise his brain in addition to his body. Da Baby is also reported to be social and affectionate but nip/swat when pet for too long. It is likely he has the potential to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended or redirected before they escalate.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Da Baby is inside of his den. When the cover is lifted, he looks around with wide, dilated eyes. Da Baby sniffs the scratcher tool intently, freezing when pet along his cheeks. He turns to watch when the tool is pet along his body. Da Baby comes halfway out of his den to eat squeeze up from a tray, but remains cautious and ducks back inside when the scratcher tool is offered again. Da Baby is displaying behaviors that may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has a bite/scratch history and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be address.
