Animal Profile

Buttons

Hello, my name is Buttons. My animal id is #87679. I am a female torbie cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 13 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/2/2020, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Buttons came to ACC as an owners surrender, her previous owner hit some bumps on the road of life and had to make the difficult decision of surrendering this sweet girl. Buttons were reported to by playfull, independent and quiet. she likes to patrol the house at night with a median level of activity. in the acre center Buttons is not thriving and is finding it hard to adjust, staying in the back of the kennel and allowing minimal handling. it would benefit Buttons if she gets out of the care center, as soon as possible, as we fear that her behavior could start to decline. Buttons is currently a bit under the weather, she was diagnosed with URI, dental disease and is Geriatric.

My medical notes are...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/04/20 Lying in litter box, body low and face tense. She makes eye contact with wide eyes when spoken to, then looks slowly around the room as the kennel door opens. She tolerates slow and gentle petting with the scratcher tool while flattening her ears and stress meowing, then turning her head to hiss. She lowers back down and licks her lips as I'm removing the sctratcher tool from her kennel. Not interested in treats or tuna at this time. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. 02/07/20 Laying low and tense in the back of her kennel, making eye contact with large, dilated pupils. She will hesitate to retreat when opening her kennel, but instead pauses and watches the assessor. She did tolerate petting the scratcher briefly, then retreated to her other kennel when pet along her body. The assessor offered her some treats, but she showed no interest. 02/09/20 Lying in back of kennel, ears forward and eyes wide. She makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks around the room as the kennel door opens. Buttons leans forward to sniff the tuna treats offered, then tolerates very slow and gentle petting with the scratcher tool along her head and shoulders while stress meowing and turning her head to watch the claw. I pull the scratcher away, then pet her very gently making sure she can see the scratcher each time it approaches her. She remains tense and unsure throughout her session - likes to be spoken to but is not yet comfortable with petting. Needs some time to adjust. Not interested in treats during interaction but she does eat them after I've walked away. 02/11/20 Crouched in front of kennel, ears forward and tail curled around feet. She makes eye contact when spoken to and vocalizes. Eats treat offered through kennel door, so I click and reward each time she sniffs my hand. I attempt petting her with the scratcher tool after building an association for a few more moments and she becomes uncomfortable and swats/bites the scratcher as it passes along her shoulders. Not comfortable with petting today but very interested in treats, especially tuna puree. May be less tolerant of interaction because of developing URI (open mouth breathing and sneezing during interaction). Needs some time to adjust. 2/12/20 Lying hunched, subdued. Slowly begins to eat chicken fillet and dry treats while allowing gentle petting on the head with the back of my hand. In time begins purring and allows extensive petting on the head. Doing better. 02/13/20 Crouched in back of kennel, body and face tense and tail curled around feet. She makes eye contact when spoken to and hisses, then steps forward to sniff the treat offered. She looks at me again and hisses before eating the treat, so I click and reward each time she makes eye contact without hissing or sniffs my hand. Uncomfortable and unsure of interaction at this time, but very food motivated and likes all treats. Feeling a bit under the weather. Needs time to adjust.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Sweet

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Buttons is appears wary in the care center, but accepts gentle attention with a slow approach. She was lying in the middle of the kennel, but becomes alert and starts breathing heavy. She focuses on assessor with dilated eyes, but leans forward and sniffs hand when extended, her body posture is kept low. She tenses up when pet and turns to watch my hand, grumbling very slightly, but doesn't escalate. She'll carefully eat treats offered and seems to relax a bit, but remains stiff and wary. She has potential to warm up more. Buttons tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown and behavior reported by her previous owner, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
