Animal Profile

Leonardo

Hello, my name is Leonardo. My animal id is #225381. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/24/2025.

Leonardo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Leonardo has been social with staff and handlers during his stay, he has begun to deteriorate due to kennel stress despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. He has been observed to jump up persistently in the kennel, intermittent leash biting during removal from the kennel, or when being brought back. He begins pulling hard, hypersalivating, with red eyes and a flushed face, and is starting to pull towards other dogs' kennels. Due to his leash biting and arousal, it has become difficult to walk him at times. Medically, Leonardo is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

Summary:: Due to Leonardo entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. **Greeter** Leonardo has been social with both male and female dogs while in care. He has shown the ability to readily acknowledge social cues and can adapt to different play styles - rough with mouthiness and body contact or chase play with minimal body contact, for example, based on the dog he is interacting with. Leonardo is exuberant during his interactions but does show the potential to become aroused when engaging in play for an extended period of time and needs assistance with taking breaks from handlers as he does not readily take breaks on his own. The behavior department recommends that Leonardo be placed in a home with a well-socialized, tolerant, and polite dog that matches his play style and can help him stay under his threshold. 06/01/25 Leonardo is used as today's greeter dog. Leonardo is introduced to two novel female dogs at the gate while off leash at the care center. Both, on separate occasions. Leonardo will attempt to greet the first novel female dog at the gate, approaching with a soft frame. Due to the novel female dog's reactivity, hard barking at Leonardo, Leonardo will disengage, running away from the gate, seeking attention from one of the handlers present. Leonardo is introduced to another novel female dog from a distance due to some concerning medical conditions the novel female dog potentially may be undergoing. To where the novel female dog lacked focus and must be revisited, Leonardo lacked interest and would stare at her from a distance displaying a square posture. Due to not being able to get a clear read on the session, the novel female dog is returned to kennel, followed by Leonardo, concluding the interaction. **Older playgroup interaction details available upon request**

Summary (1):: 05/30/25: Leonardo is reintroduced to a familiar female. Both dogs will rush to the gate with loose frames as they are reunited. The familiar female is moved to the back of the pen to allow Leonardo the space to enter. Both dogs are reintroduced on leash, both will attempt to pull towards one another will they meet briefly scenting one another. Both dogs will engage in a wrestling style of play and will tolerate each others mouthiness. After a session of play, both Leonardo and the novel female are separated. Concluding the interaction.

Summary (3):: 06/26/25 Leonardo is lying down in his karanda bed as the handler approaches. He will allow clipping to his harness as the handler unlocks the kennel door to take him for a walk. Leonardo exits the kennel exuberantly, grabbing a toy the handler administers to him. He carries the toy throughout the building as they are exiting the facility, dropping it before exiting the building. Leonardo maintains a loose frame as he trots alongside the handler accepting pets and leaning in when the handler pets him. Leonardo is taken on a lengthy walk where he maintains his moderate pace while trotting alongside the handler. Leonardo is administered treats in which he takes gently, proceeding to walk towards the facility as the walk comes to an end. Leonardo will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 06/22/25: Leonardo is observed to be pulling very hard, heavy panting, hypersalivating, with a flushed face and dilated eyes. He pulls toward other kennels on his way down the walkway and has to be muscled into kennel. 06/19/25 (Trainer Note): Leonardo was sleeping on his bed as the handler approached. He came to the front of his kennel and began to jump, he momentariy got his foot stuck through his leash and sat when cued so the handler could free him and re leash. Leonardo pulled moderately to the Live Room, when inside he sat and was clipped to a drag leash. Leonardo and the handler began some mat work, Leonardo would bounce onto the karunda bed when the handler pointed at it, he would automatically sit, and TAB before being marked and rewarded. The handler was able to gradually take three steps back and return to him and he remained on the bed. Leonardo became distracted and jumped onto a chair and began to cob a pillow. The handler managed to get his attention and guide him away from the pillow and put it out of the way at the back of the counter. Leonardo worked on some more duration on the mat and became distracted again. Leonardo jumped with all four paws onto the counter and took a toy. He was cued down by the handler and asked to sit, which he did immediately, he as rewarded with the toy. Leonardo solicited some pets, and was easily returned to his kennel, taking his toy with him.

Summary (4):: 6/18: As a handler is collecting the music speakers, they see two ACS having difficulty leashing Leonardo due to him leash biting. When the handler approaches, they see Leonardo biting and pulling the lead into the kennel. The handler drops a handful of treats into the kennel and Leonardo releases to eat the treats. The ACS removes their lead and makes another attempt to leash Leonardo, but he jumps up and the lead ends up around his torso. The handler drops more treats for him to keep eating and advises the second ACS to use their lead to leash him rather than trying to remove the first. The second ACS is able to leash Leonardo while continuing to feed him treats. Once out of the kennel, the first lead falls off and he proceeds on his walk. - MC 06/15/25 (playgroup): Leonardo is sleeping at the front of kennel as handler approaches. He jumps up excitedly at the kennel door as the handler leashes him. Leonardo pulls hard exiting kennel, jumping up at a neighboring kennel and landing on his back. He recovers quickly and pulls hard out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). Leonardo is social with handlers throughout his time in the yard and will jump up onto handlers to solicit attention. After his session he is returned to kennel safely. 06/12/25 (trainer Note): Leonardo was sleeping on his bed as the handler approaches, he was easily leashed and pulled moderately to the Live Room. Leonardo and the handler did some mat work, where he would lie down on the bed and the handler could take three steps away and return to mark and reward him. After several successful repetitions, Leonardo began to pull at a dog bed on of a crate. This prompted the handler to begin work on the leave it cue, which Leonardo began to quickly understand. Leonardo was easily leashed and returned to his kennel. 06/09/25 (playgroup): Leonardo is jumping up onto kennel door excitedly as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats to redirect him from the kennel door but he shows no interest. As the kennel door is cracked open, Leonardo begins paw slapping at the kennel door, catching handler's lead with his paws multiple times. Handler resets as they drop the lead over Leonardo's head again, be paw slaps and gets his paws through the lead causing it to slide over his body. A second handler approaches and tosses treats in an attempt to get Leonardo to move so the lead will drop off of his body but he shows no interest. Handler uses handler 2's lead and is able to leash Leonardo. He jumps up onto handler excitedly as he exits kennel and second handler is able to slide the first lead off of his body. Leonardo pulls moderately out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). He is social with handlers throughout his time in the yard and will jump up onto them to solicit petting and treats. After his session, Leonardo is returned to kennel safely.

Summary (5):: 6/08/25: Leonardo was reported to lunge at a small dog during his borough break and just missed them. A staff member asked the Borough breakers if he was trying to bite, and they said he just lunged, but they were unsure. They stated he was fine otherwise and very sweet. 06/06/25 (Trainer Note): Leonardo is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body and mild pant as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Leonardo is loose and social with staff, engaging readily in the various enrichment items. He is easily leashed. As handler passes a dog in a crate, Leonardo lunges and hard barks. He is returned to kennel without issue. 06/03/25: When the handler approaches, Leonardo is standing in front of his kennel with a loose frame, panting. Leonardo is easily leashed and escorted to the play yards. When on leash, Leonardo will pull ahead of the handler. In the yard Leonardo will conduct a Dog-to-Dog interaction. Please refer to Behavior assessment for Leonardo's dog-to-dog summary. Leonard is then escorted back to the care center. When entering his kennel, Leonardo will whip around and bite the leash with his front teeth. Leonardo will hold onto it briefly, allowing the handler to quickly retrieve it, before closing the door. Leonardo is safely secured. 6/1/25: Leonardo was leashed with ease and pulled towards other kennels on the way through the kennel rooms. Leonardo jumped up against the door of a dog that was kennel fighting but was easily moved along with forward motion. Leonardo pulled hard on leash on the way to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Leonardo was highly social and frequently solicited contact with handlers by resting his front paws on their lap when seated and leaning his body into them. Handler did not experience or observe Leonardo's contact with any of the handlers progress into mounting behavior. Leonardo pulled on the way back to kennel and began mouthing the leash as handler was removing it. He was immediately redirected with a squeaker toy which he took up onto his kuranda bed.

Summary (6):: 05/31/25 (Trainer Note): Leonardo is waiting at the front of his kennel and begins jumping as the trainer unlocks the door. He sits and is easily leashed and attempts to jump at the handler twice, before pulling moderately to the Live Room. When inside, Leonardo is clipped to a drag leash and immediately begins to jump on the trainer. The trainer asks for a sit, and Leonardo obliges and they engage in the up/down game. Leonardo begins to engage in the enrichment items and will sit and take a breath in-between items. Leonardo gets distracted and begins to jump on the trainer, putting his nose in their treat pouch. The handler closes the treat pouch and begins some mat work with Leonardo. They stand next to the karunda bed and point, Leonardo jumps onto the bed and sits, he is then marked and rewarded. Leonardo engages in multiple repetitions and the trainer attempts to lure him into a down with varying success. Leonardo solicits pets and then gets the zoomies. He is easily leashed and returned to his kennel. When the trainer is removing their leash, Leonardo briefly puts his mouth on it, the trainer tosses some treats and he is quickly redirected. 05/30/25: Leonardo is loose and wiggly in his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard for a meet and greet with a playmate. Once inside the yard, Leonardo is fitted with a drag leash and set free to roam. He displays a loose body and approaches the gate for a nose-to-nose greeting. When the gate is opened, both dogs display loose body language, wagging their tails, jumping on each other, and playfully mouthing. When the play session ends, Leonardo is brought back to his kennel safely with no issues. 05/30/25 (staff report): "Leash bites a bit when being brought back to kennel but treats help." 05/24/25 (playgroup): Leonardo's behavior remained consistent with playgroup note from 05/23/25. 05/23/25 (Trainer Note): Leonardo is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. Date of intake:: 4/23/2025

Date of initial:: 4/25/2025

Summary:: Very friendly, accepts pets, gives kisses, tail wagging, allows all medical handling.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Leonard mounting and mouthiness, we recommend he is placed in a home with No children (under 13). No cats: Due to Leonardo's behavior towards small dogs, we recommend he goes to a home without cats.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During Leonardo handling assessment he began to jump and attempt to mount the handler he was able to be redirected with a squeaker and plush toys. Leonardo also displayed mouthy behavior , mouthing on the handlers hands. For Leonardo's poor impulse control and mouthiness, focus on teaching basic manners and bite inhibition. Use squeakers and plush toys to redirect his jumping and mounting behavior. Practice cues like "sit," "stay," and "leave it" to build impulse control. Reward gentle mouth behavior with treats and praise, and consistently redirect mouthing to appropriate toys. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Leonardo was noted to display panting during his handling assessment. Use gradual desensitization and positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior. Provide breaks during handling sessions to prevent overwhelming him. Monitor his body language closely and use soothing techniques to help him relax. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Leonardo has been observed to react to dogs on leash, and noted to lunge towards small animals. As Leonardo plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration. We recommend a front-clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs.
