ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/3/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Marbles sits with a neutral face/body with forward ears and almond eyes but hisses when i approach and speak softly. When the assess-a-hand was slowly introduced he very briefly tolerated petting on and around his back before he turned and bit onto the tool holding on. After a releasing, his eyes dilated as he watched the assess-a-hand closely for any movement and when contact was attempted once again he swatted, striked and bit the tool while growling/grumbling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Affectionate,Playful,Curious,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Overstimulation,Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Client stated that Marble had begun to poop outside of the litterbox for the past two months, client took Marble to the vet three weeks ago where she was diagnosed with diabetes. After starting medication, Marble began to use the litterbox again. This past week Marble has again begun to poop outside of the litterbox. Client stated that she has never urinated outside of the litterbox. Marble had access to one, covered, litterbox with a plastic liner, located in the basement. She used unscented, clumping, clay, litter. She was not able to see outside cats. The box was scooped every other day. Client changed the type of litter, cleaned the entire box, blocked areas that were soiled, and cleaned soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner. Client reported that another resident cat had recently moved out of the home. *It should be noted that due to the recent diagnosis of Diabetes and being in early stages of management, it cannot be ruled out that inappropriate elimination is in fact due to his medical issues and is not a behavioral issue as he is noted to not have a history of litter box accidents prior and the behavior seemed to improve for some time once he was medicated* Marble is noted to play rough and play rough with other cats. Marble is noted to nip or swat when pet too long, and showed signs of this during his evaluation. When pet along his side, he tensed and turned to nip at the assessor's arm. When they switch to using the scratcher tool, he begins to low growl and continues to slowly escalate to hissing, and swiping at the tool. When the assessor's hand gets too close, he reaches out and swipes - breaking the glove but not breaking skin - and lunges slightly at the assessor. Given that he is an older cat and appears to be low energy at this time due to his medical condition, none of this escalation resulted in broken skin, however should he continue to be pushed or require hands on handling, this level of escalation may require more advanced handling skills.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: He is shy, timid, and hisses at children. He takes two weeks or longer to warm up to new cats. Once he does he is playful, curious, and tolerant. He has been noted to play rough. He has previously lived with one other cat.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Marble is sitting on top of his den with a neutral face and body. The assessor offers out the scratcher tool and he leans forward to sniff, accepting pets along his head and cheeks. The assessor then switches to use their hand to pet, and he again allows pets along his head and cheeks. When the assessor pets along his side and reaches his hips (due to him being seated) he turns his head quickly to nip at their arm but does not make contact (due to speed and the assessor wearing long sleeves). The assessor switches back to using the tool and he begins to low growl and hiss before contact is made again and when pet with the tool he continues to low growl and swipes at the tool. At one point, the assessor's hand gets too close for his liking and he swats at their hand, breaking the glove but not their skin. After the scratcher tool is pulled back he lunges slightly at the assessor as he hisses but remains on top of the den throughout the interaction. Pick up was not attempted. Marble is noted to be an affectionate, talkative and independent cat in his previous home with a history of overstimulation. It is unclear how much of his behavior in shelter at this time is also due to his medical condition. Marble is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
