During multiple handling attempts, he consistently displayed avoidance behaviors, retreating from handlers upon approach and is noted to headwhip and thrash when touched. Due to his current level of fear and aversion to touch, he will require placement with an experienced New Hope parnter who can provide him with a decompression period, structured support, and a slow introduction to handling. A volunteer writes: Hurricane is a good boy who finds himself at the shelter due to no fault of his own. He is trying his best to show us his happy self, but it is hard in a stressful environment like the shelter. He spends his time in the yard bouncing from lap to lap to toy, He gently drops his toy into our laps, asking for just one more game of fetch before he has to go back inside. He had lived with 2 adults and 1 cat. He had been friendly and gentle with strangers and the cat her lived with. He prefers space from other dogs. He came to us after a conflict with the adult child in the home. Hurricane is noted to be a couch potato who loves watching TV. He is ready for your fall season premiere line up. He loved car rides and enjoys playing with water. Hurricane is looking for a rescue partner.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: In the prior home it is noted that Hurricane is not bothered if someone was to touch his food or toys. He will growl and snap if someone was to try to take his treats. Destructive behavior:Hurricane has a tendency to chew on items left on the floor, indicating a need for increased supervision, appropriate chew outlets, and enrichment to redirect this behavior. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Handling/touch sensitivity/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: During his handling assessment, Hurricane showed significant discomfort with touch, including head-whipping, thrashing, and avoidance. He also became mouthy when touched, suggesting both touch sensitivity and poor bite inhibition. In the prior home it is noted that He does not like having his nails trimmed and he will growl. These behaviors highlight the need for gradual desensitization to handling and positive reinforcement for calm behavior. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful: Owner stated that he will become stated during thunder or fireworks. He may benefit from counter-conditioning and the use of calming strategies during stressful events. Please see the handout on decompression period. Bite history (human): In the previous home, the owner reported that their adult child with special needs was playing loud music and throwing objects around the house. During one incident, an object was thrown at Hurricane, causing him to yelp. He then jumped up and nipped the child's wrist; the nip did not break the skin. The owner emphasized that Hurricane has never bitten anyone before and described him as a good dog. They expressed concern for the safety of both Hurricane and their child, which ultimately led to the decision to surrender him. Anxiety: Hurricane is noted to display heavy panting in the care center Barrier frustration: in the prior home it is noted that he will bark at strangers when they approach the home. Training focused on impulse control and desensitization to triggers may help reduce this response. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
