Rain
Hello, my name is Rain. My animal id is #257874. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/22/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRain is at risk due to behavior concerns. Rain was found as a stray with no known history during a recent Rain storm. She has fearful and tense during her stay. While on walks and with a slow approach she will open up a bit more acceptings treats and loosening up. Recently when being returned to her kennel Rain attempted to redirect onto handlers due to this we are no longer able to safely handle. Medically, Rain is apparently healthy.

Date of intake:: 6/22/2026
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history
Date of assessment:: 6/28/2026
Summary:: When brought into the assessment room, Rain was observed to be tense and fearful. She is not receptive to treats and when the handler approaches, she will freeze and begin to hard stare at them. The handler presents the collar, Rain becomes tense with a tense face, lip licks and then moves away from the handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Rain is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 7/8/26: Rain is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with high wags and a slightly tense body. She pushed her nose into the fence and play bowed, pawed at the fence and bounced. When meeting face to face, she engaged in play bowing and spinning. She began standing on her hind legs and play grunting more with time. She ignored a correction from the other dog and continued to facilitate vertical play. The other dog gave a more prolonged growl correction and Rain growled back while on her hind legs. She was pulled away and redirected her attention immediately.
Summary (5):: 7/10/26: Rain is reported to attempt a redirection as the handler muscles her into kennel, after she refuses to enter on her own; the handler tosses treats into her kennel, but she shows no interest, which results in them muscling her in. Rain attempts to bite their arm, but misses. As the handler attempts to retrieve their leash with a hook, Rain hard barks and bites the hook. 7/8/26: It is noted on the whiteboard "careful returning to kennel, may bite" it does not specify any more info. 07/08/26: Rain is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is soft bodied and allows leashing with a slow approach before exiting kennel to the yard for a dog-dog interaction. She walks outside alongside handler and enters the yard with slight hesitancy but she quickly approaches some of the staff members in the yard by jumping on them and soliciting pets from them. She allows handler to pet and collar her although she briefly lip licks while being collared. Her gate greet is conducted (details available on beh. assessment) and is subsequently brought back inside, she is returned without issue. 7/7/26 (midday walk): Rain is sitting at the front of her kennel with a neutral body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Rain walks with mild to no leash tension; she doesn't react to dogs or people. Rain tolerates pets from the handler; she spits out trats given by them. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and brings Rain to her kennel; Rain places her front two paws inside the kennel, looks back at the handler, and climbs out her kennel. The handler brings Rain to the yard; as they sit down, Rain faces them and allows pets. After a few minutes outside, the handler walks Rain inside; when she approaches her kennel, she climbs in with her front two paws, looks back, and exits the kennel. The handler brings Rain back to her kennel and tosses treats inside; Rain climbs inside to eat them, and the handler eventually removes their leash. 7/7/26: It is reported that Rain snapped at an ACS when being returned to her kennel yesterday morning. When approaching her kennel, Rain refused to enter; the ACS muscles her into kennel. Once Rain is inside her kennel, she quickly turns around and snaps at the ACS' hand, almost making contact; after they rove their leash, she was growling and hard barking at them.
Summary (6):: 6/28/26 (Assessment): Rain is sitting at the font of her kennel when handler approached. She was easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before her assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). While walking Rain walked next to handler with a slack leash. She accepted pets on her head but tensed when petted on her back. She displayed no reactivity to dogs nor people that she saw on her walk. She was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/26/26: Rain is lying down in her kennel and as the handler calls her, she stands up and slowly approaches the front with a neutral body and tucked tail. She is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Rain walks next to the handler with no leash tension; she doesn't react to dogs, and sniffs one passersby. While walking down the street, two small dogs - one of which is off leash - see Rain and begins to react to her, but she doesn't react back; the off-leash small dog begins to run towards her, but the handler walks Rain across the street as its owner calls their dog. The handler then brings Rain inside to the office. She sniffs another handler, but shows no interest when they present a treat. She lies down for a couple minutes until the handler calls her name and walks her out the room. The handler clips their leash and returns Rain to her kennel with ease. 6/25/26: Rain is sitting at the front of her kennel, slightly trembling and briefly licking her lips. The handler slowly opens the kennel door and presents the leash; Rain dodges it a bit, but allows the handler to leash her; she is brought out of her kennel. On the street, Rain walks with mild leash tension; she doesn't react to dogs or people. Rain mostly sniffs while walking around the block. When he handler calls her name, she looks at them briefly; she shows no interest in treats or their hand when presented. The handler then brings Rain inside to the office; as they are other handlers present, Rain slowly approaches and sniffs them. She then lies down on the ground. After a few minutes, the handler calls her to stand up; Rain stands and looks at the handler with neutral body and slightly widen eyes. The handler leads Rain out the room, clips their leash, and returns her to her kennel. 6/24/26 (PM): Rain is sitting at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken to the yard. She maintains her tense body and does not attempt to interact with handlers. When returning to kennel, the handler is easily able to clip their leash and she enters kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 6/24/26 (PM): Rain is sitting at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken to the yard. She maintains her tense body and does not attempt to interact with handlers. When returning to kennel, the handler is easily able to clip their leash and she enters kennel without issue. 6/24/26: Rain is at the front of the kennel with a tense body and tucked tail. A new handler attempts to leash Rain, and they would remain avoidant, attempting to slightly push past the handler's legs as they held the kennel door. Shortly after, Rain would slowly walk towards the back of the kennel, and as the handler went to attempt to lasso them, Rain began to bare teeth and let out a low growl. An experienced handler was able to step in and slowly lasso Rain with a much wider loop; she then slowly exits her kennel with no issue and is taken out to the play yard. She walks on a loose leash, with a tucked tail and pinned ears. Rain also walks on a loose leash towards one of the playpens and would begin to explore the pen and relieve herself. She would not react towards any dogs in the neighboring pens and would remain tense throughout her walk. Handler attempts to toss a treat, she would sniff and ignore it. Handler is then able to clip her and walk her back to the shelter; once inside, she is slowly returned to her kennel with no further issues. Interaction was then ceased. 6/24/26: Rain is reported bare teeth at the handler when they leashed him; he is still able to be brought out.
Date of intake:: 6/22/2026
Summary:: Fearful, trembling
Date of initial:: 6/24/2026
Summary:: Tense but allows all handling
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rain so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Rain has been observed to bare teeth and growl at handlers when they attempt to leash her. It is important to move slowly with Rain, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
