Pop
Hello, my name is Pop. My animal id is #266281. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/3/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not good with kids.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPop is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the previous home. Pop is reported to have two separate bite incidents towards one of the resident children due to resource guarding under the teenager's bed. Both bites were bites and releases that resulted in small puncture wounds to the child's arm and leg that were treated at home. He reportedly ran back under the bed afterwards and intermittently would growl at the child while in the home. His previous family reported that he enjoys most treats and will get the zoomies when near grass. During his stay in care, Pop has allowed minimal handling. When being picked up to be removed or returned to the kennel, he begins thrashing lightly. With handlers, he ignores their attempts to interact and keeps to himself. Medically, Pop has CIRDC, nuclear sclerosis, and is considered to be geriatric.

Medically, Pop has CIRDC, nuclear sclerosis, and is considered to be geriatric. Pop was surrendered to the care center by his previous owner due to his behavior towards a child in the home. In two instances, the most recent a year ago, Pop is reported to have bitten the child when they ran into a room where he was sleeping, in one case on the arm and in another the leg. In both cases, this was a bite and release that left small punctures and was treated at home. The owner otherwise describes Pop as an independent dog who is good on the leash and likes be where his people are, but is happy to nap or chew on a bone by himself. At the care center, in calmer environments and with time to warm up, Pop has shown social behavior with staff. Due to noted concerns displayed in a home environment, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced, adult-only foster home, a period of decompression, and any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (7):: 10/5/26: Pop is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is slightly avoidant of the leash but will remain still as the handler places it over his head. When the handler uses a towel to remove him from kennel, Pop will thrash until he is placed on the ground. He will walk to the center of the room but once in front of the door will thrash lightly but will walk in once he notices the door is open. He will stand in the behavior office for the majority of the time. The handler will walk around with him and he will sniff some things but ultimately will stand and watch his surroundings. After a while, when he is picked up with a towel to be returned to kennel, he will thrash lightly but allows the handler to lift him into the kennel and secure him safely.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Pop's bite history and continued defensive behavior towards the child in his previous home, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, we recommend Pop be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home, a period of decompression, and any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression | Multiple bite history/Risk of future aggression | Bite history (human): In his previous home, Pop bit a resident child twice, two years apart. In both cases he was sleeping under a bed when the child ran in, and Pop ran out and bit, bite-and-release resulting in small punctures that were treated at home. Since then, the owner reported that Pop had continued to show fearful, defensive behavior, growling at the child. It is important to move slowly with Pop, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handouts on Fearful and Defensive Aggression and Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
