Misa
Hello, my name is Misa. My animal id is #264110. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/1/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMisa is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Misa has shown dog-directed reactivity, including staring and pulling hard toward other dogs. During one incident, she redirected toward a handler's ankle and pant leg when leash pressure was used to move her away from a small dog. Outside of these moments, Misa is social with handlers, approaches with a loose and wiggly body, accepts petting and treats, and can be redirected with food. Medically, Misa has a mass on her left hind leg and dental disease.

During her time here, Misa has shown social and affiliative behavior with staff, greeting known handlers with a loose, wiggly body and leaning in for pets. Misa has also shown anxious behavior and reactivity while at the care center, and has redirected onto staff-- attempting to bite at pant legs-- when she has been reacting to other dogs and they have moved her away. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: Misa arrived as a stray, so her behavior with other dogs is unknown. 9/23/26: Misa greets a novel male dog through a barrier. Misa approaches displaying tense body language before muzzle punching the gate and hard barking toward the novel male, who maintains a neutral body throughout. Due to Misa's escalating behavior, she is moved away from the barrier and the interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 10/31/26: Misa is jumping and barking at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would pull hard ahead while heavy panting as she explored around. She would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected with treats. She pulls on the way back to her kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 10/29/26: Misa is barking and jumping up at her kennel door as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats, and she then pulls hard while heavy panting on the way outside to the yard. On the walk, she continues to pull ahead and instantly relieves herself. She is then taken to the yard. In the yard, she is able to be transferred to a drag leash and she then has a loose and wiggly body as she approached the handler and would sit to receive treats. She pulls hard on the way back to her kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 10/25/26: Misa is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches, but when the handler opens the kennel door, Misa backs away slightly. The handler leashes Misa and brings her to the office where she is clipped to a drag leash and allowed to roam. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the behavior concerns displayed during her handling assessment and her medical exam, we recommend that Misa be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Misa's behavior in playgroup, we recommend she goes to a home as a single pet and does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity| Anxiety: Misa has been observed to be highly anxious during both her medical exam and handling assessment. During her exam, Misa actively sought an exit/pawing at and scratching the room door, vocalizing, and escalating to head whipping and thrashing when her abdomen and tail were touched. During her handling assessment, Misa was heavily panting, unable to settle, pacing the room, and persistently wailing throughout. Please see handout on handling/touch sensitivity and generalized anxiety. Kennel presence: Misa has been observed to hard bark, bare her teeth, lunge, and hit the kennel glass when people pass or during cleaning times. Please see handout on Kennel presence. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration | Low threshold for arousal: Misa has attempted to redirect onto a handler's pant leg as the handler tried to move her away when reacting towards another dog; she did not make contact. She will benefit from force-free, positive reinforcement-based training to teach her to look at you instead of other dogs and appropriately channel her behavior when overstimulated. Please see handouts on Arousal and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
