Animal Profile

Marty Wolf

Hello, my name is Marty Wolf. My animal id is #249648. I am a female white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Marty Wolf is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process! A volunteer writes: The person who knew Marty Wolf best and loved her most isn't here to tell us about her now. They would know her favorite toys and places to nap, her preferred times for bird (or squirrel) watching and what her favorite blanket looks like. Marty Wolf came to us when her guardian passed away and though caring family members came by to care for her for a couple of months afterward, she needs just a bit more stability to become the best kitty she can be. Care Center life hasn't quite been her style, but Marty Wolf was quick to tell us that she loves treats, especially baby food. We do everything we can to explain that we're friends, but after all the big changes she's been through recently, we certainly can't say we blame Marty Wolf for not welcoming us with open paws. It's not that she doesn't want to perse, but snuggled up on the top of her den, Marty Wolf looks on with wide and focused eyes whenever we appear. We're hopeful that she'll settle in with time, but what we hope for most of all is that her forever family will come in and scoop her up.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Marty Wolf was brought in without information on her behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake the cat allowed all handling.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 3/17/26: Marty Wolf is on top of her den with a tense face, forward ears, and slightly dilated eyes. She sniffs scratcher tool with squeeze up treat on it and licks it a few times. When petting is attempted on her cheeks, she hisses but allows a few brief pets before raising her paw and batting at the tool with moderate intensity in repetition, claws sheathed. Marty Wolf hisses and backs up when pet along her body once, raising her paw in warning before batting several times again. She begins to low grumble and the interaction is ended. No pick up is attempted, she is rewarded with a tray of squeeze up that she finishes. 4/3/26 Vol. Marty Wolf was resting inside den with her head poking out. Her pupils were partly dilated. She returned slow blinks. She sniffed squeeze up on scratcher tool, then retreated further into den, where she lay down. She did not show further interest in treats or toys. After a minute or so, the tip of her tail began to flick. 4/4/26 Vol. Was in den when approached, spoken to and door opened. Was lying down facing forward when I lifted the cover. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool, slightly poked part of head through portal door to sniff treats. Did not eat any treats and drew head back into den. Was sitting inside den looking forward. Offered lickable treats on scratcher tool. Did not eat treat and swatted at scratcher tool multiple times. Went into hunched position and still looking forward. Occasionally peered face out of den and then back into den. End of interaction. 4/5/26 Vol. Marty stayed in her den. She stuck her head out to eat squeeze-up on the scratcher. I got her more squeeze-up, but she wouldn’t stick her head out again, so I put the squeeze-up in a tray. While I was still in CLEH in front of the kennels, she did stick her head out again. 04/07/26 FB47 Marty Wolff was in the den, and when the den cover was removed, he began a little hissing and then a little lunging and swatting at the den door. Treats were left. 4/12/26 Vol. Sleeping comfortably in cube bed. Woke when spoken to. May be in heat - was treading her back legs. Briefly came down to sniff a cup of treats and squeeze-up, but didn't eat any, then retreated back to cube. Followed cat dancer with interest but did not play. Briefly came out again to sniff my hand but then saw motion in the room and retreated again. 04/13/26 FB47 Marty Wolf was lying asleep in his cubicle and then woke up as I approached, appeared curious and fairly relaxed, sniffed treats, and was a little jumpy when approached closer, and when given a finger to sniff, he swatted my hand with closed claws. 4/15/26 She was resting on top of the cube and observing from a distance. She initially tolerated petting with the scratcher tool, but then became uncomfortable sniffing, hissing, and swatting at it. The session ended with offering treats to help reduce her stress.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Calm,Curious,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Marty Wolf has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Marty Wolf was resting calmly but alert and cautious, watching and listening to her surroundings. She accepted treats from the scratcher tool and briefly tolerated head pets, though signs like skin twitching and tail flicking showed sensitivity. After she batted at the tool, the assessment was ended to reduce her stress. Marty Wolf tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
