Animal Profile

Boog

Hello, my name is Boog. My animal id is #233341. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/31/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Boog is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Boog in care has been intensely fearful and generally uncomfortable. Boog in the care center has escalated to lunging at staff, growling and hard barking when they enter spaces he is in, and has also redirected onto staff members after reacting to dogs on leash outside of the care center, not breaking skin and mouthing with moderate pressure. Medically, Boog had an episode at the end of a walk where he fell over/lost consciousness briefly. The cause is unknown at this time, but seizure is considered unlikely based on the description of the episode; vasovagal syncope is a consideration. No treatment or diagnostics recommended at this time, but consider if episode occurs again.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Pre-Screener Form Boog is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Boog in care has been intensely fearful and generally uncomfortable. Medically, Boog is apparently healthy. Boog entered the care center as a stray, so his behavior history in a home environment is unknown. Since intake, Boog has exhibited such as growling and lunging at medical staff during his medical exam when they were scanning him for a microchip and when handlers attempt to take him out of his kennel for walks. Boog has shown gradual improvement with familiar handlers and structured interactions. Boog has shown the ability to engage with handlers for walks, respond to basic cues like "sit," and take treats gently, even when slightly tense or wary. He has demonstrated some discomfort around unfamiliar people and novel objects, occasionally tensing, growling, or barking, but is also highly food-motivated and can be redirected with treats and soft encouragement. Boog is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

Episode of losing consciousness reported yesterday during behavior walk: "I took Boog out for his scheduled behavior walk. Due to the hot weather, the walk was shortened. On the return, Boog walked calmly beside me on a loose lead without pulling. When taken back to his kennel room, a staff member walked by Boog became tense but did not pull. I anticipated a potential reaction due to Boog’s reported stranger danger. I cued him to sit, and while he was in the sit position, he suddenly fell backward, and began paddling on his side while also hitting his head. Boog was a little wobbly but was able to get up and regain balance by himself. Due to his Behavior, a Harness won't be fitted at this time." Kennel-side recheck today S/O: QAR-BAR, no c/s/v/d noted, no ocular or nasal discharge, eupneic, appropriate mentation. Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Upon intake the dog was in a crate, staff brought him to pre-exam and lassoed him to get him out of the crate. Once out of the crate the dog walked into his kennel without much fuss. Staff was unable to collar or scan because of this.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/04/25 Boog is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Boog will approach the gate appearing aloof as he displays a neutral frame, panting and pacing along the gate line. Boog appears conflicted as he now maintains his distance from the gate, reluctant to return. This concludes the interaction.

Summary (6):: 08/11/25 (PM) Boog is lying down in kennel as the handler approaches. Boog rises and will stand neutrally as he is leashed. As they exit the kennel room, they take an alternative route, going up stair case C to decrease the likely-hood of seeing other dogs on their walk. As they scale the stairs, exiting the facility, Boog remains soft and neutral, gently trotting alongside the handler. Boog is administered treats in which he takes with a soft mouth and will catch them when tossed. Boog will maintain a steady pace alongside the handler. As a stranger is walking down the block, Boog will tense up, however, the handler moves Boog to the side, administering him treats as he sits. They will return to the facility, entering the staircase in which they came out of, returning back to kennel with no issue. 8/11/25: Boog is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and begins to tail wag slightly when baby talked. Boog is easily leashed and brought of his kennel, where he begins to stare at passing staff that make way for him, and continues walking outside, pulling mildly. Boog sees other dogs from a distance, and begins to stiffen and whine. Boog will explore his surroundings once they are far away, and relives himself. A staff member walks past Boog, putting there dog on the side of where Boog is walking, and the handler tries to walk Boog past quickly due to this, and begins to lunge, hard bark and redirects onto the handlers knee, mouthing it with moderate pressure. Boog is taken across the street and begins sniff his surroundings. When coaxed, Boog will offer sit cues and eat food with a hard mouth. Boog is taken for a longer walk to help him relax, and is returned to kennel with no issue, only flinching away from a fan he bumps into. 08/10/25: Boog is sitting at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought out for his morning walk, maintaining a neutral frame while walking on a loose leash moderately ahead of the handler without pulling. Boog will sit when cued and takes cheese treats gently from the handler’s hand. He relieves himself while exploring the neighborhood. Once the walk is complete, Boog is returned to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (7):: 08/08/25 (Assessment note): Boog is standing at the front of his kennel with a stiff body posture. Upon handler’s approach, he will take treats from the handler when offered. He is leashed with ease and brought to the assessment room. Once inside, a secondary handler feeds him treats while the primary handler holds him, allowing him to be collared without issue before being released to roam the room. Boog appears stiff with the primary handler who removed him from the kennel but will accept treats from them. When the primary handler leaves the room for a knock, Boog will stare, stiffen up, and then shake off. For more information, see behavioral assessment. Boog is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 08/08/25 (AM): Boog approaches the kennel door with a neutral frame and is easily leashed. The handler will escort Boog out of the care center for a walk. When Passing a handler with a novel dog, Boog will grow stiff with a high curved tail. When they are passing in close proximity, Boog will lunge and snarl but when restrained Boog will stop and walk away with the handler. When on leash Boog will walk beside the handler, aloof, exploring and scenting his surroundings. Boog will attempt to pull what arouses his interest. When the handler offers treats, Boog will gain interest in the handler offering sits and taking them gently. Boog is escorted back to his kennel where he is unleashed and safely secured. 08/07/25 (PM): Boog is standing at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He gives the handler a slight tail wag in greeting and is easily leashed. Boog walks without pulling outside and engages readily with the environment, pausing for extended intervals to sniff. He tenses and hard stares at strangers and dogs, but does not escalate further. The handler walks him to a quieter area and he shakes off, softening overall. He responds to the sit cue and takes treats with a soft mouth. Handler begins to reinforce Boog for walking with a loose leash and he softens further, starting to bounce in his step. He is returned to kennel without issue.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Boog is noted to body block and hover over the assessor toy during the resource guarding portion of his handling assessment. Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During Boog medical exam he began to become fearful and display whale eyes.
