Animal Profile

Daly

Hello, my name is Daly. My animal id is #213047. I am a female tortoiseshell cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/24/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person health - pregnant.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Daly is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Eight year old Daly was owned since kittenhood. She suddenly fell out of luck when her owner was told that cats are a threat for human babies in the making....Daly had to go although she seems to have been quite a faithful companion to her owner, waiting every night for him at the door like a doggy. Daly has been with us for over one month and has not been a "happy camper". Until recently, I never saw her outside of her hiding box but lately, she has been resting by her door, trying to make contact, rubbing herself on the bars, eating treats and seeking petting through a wand. It's a step forward but still, she has been conflicted with staff trying to bring out the real Daly and make her available to the public. Volunteers do not directly interact with "rescue only"cats for safety reasons but we can talk to them, treat them and interact with them without opening their kennel or touching them. There is some frustration involved on both sides, sure but there are some mutual benefits and I really think that Daly does enjoy our "encounters". A cage is not a place for a companion animal. It certainly does not bring the best out of them. Daly needs out with an experienced foster under the umbrella of a compassionate rescue willing to give her a chance to feel safe and loved, for ever this time. Daly is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Sweet,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression,Rough play,Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 11.01.2024: During the assessment, Daly was inside the den and remained quiet when spoken to softly. However, when the scratcher tool was extended toward her side portal door, she hissed and swatted at it. To minimize her stress, the assessment was concluded early. 12.03.2024: Once sweet-talked, Daly came out of her den with soft eyes and a swishing tail. She rubbed against the kennel door affectionately. She lightly bit the assessor's finger that was lying there immobile, as if it was a toy. Conflicted and fearful, she retreated back inside of her feral den. She came back out rubbing against the portal and stretching along the way, and allowed a brief 2 seconds pet before batting the assessor's hand again. Daly is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
