Animal Profile

Catnip

Hello, my name is Catnip. My animal id is #254907. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 15 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Catnip is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Catnip is a senior kitty that had a strange episode of ataxia and falling over, with an unknown cause. She also has a heart murmur, dental disease, and suspected ear mites. Catnip should follow up with a veterinarian to discuss additional diagnostics, treatments, monitoring. Behaviorally, she is timid but has allowed handling.

I am a sweet, older gal looking for my forever home. I am a little nervous here but my friends at ACC are getting to know me and helping me open up every day. I am hoping to find a home where I can feel safe and show just how sweet I can be! I've lived in a home with other cat friends and I just know I will blossom when I'm with my new family. I hope you come and find me soon!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/22/26 FB25 After behavior assessments of former housemates Catnip and Lady showed they were both fearful in kennel, we decided to attempt reintroduction. After Lady reacted positively to Catnip's toy, sniffing and rubbing her face on it and then attempting to play with it, we brought Lady over to Catnip's kennel. Catnip remained on the perch and Lady ran to the litter box below, but neither showed any concerning signs toward one another. We will give them some time to settle and see how they are doing together. 5-26-26 FB25 Catnip is resting in her box. She remains lying down as I open the kennel door with a neutral expression. She has no reaction until I offer Lady some Churu on a scratcher. Catnip suddenly gets up and walks right to me. She eats some Churu right from the squeeze up and lets me pet her head, leaning in to the touch. When I put away the treats, she begins looking around the kennel for more and jumps quickly on and off the perch, startling Lady and causing her to hiss. Catnip then retreats back to the perch. 5/29/26 FB61 On perch, body and face tense with her ears forward and her pupils dilated. She leans forward to sniff the treats and catnip toy offered, however she remains too focused on the room and me to commit to eating them at this moment. She is tolerant of petting while remaining in place, continuing to focus on the room behind me. 6/2/26 FB25 Catnip is sitting on top of her perch. She has a tense body and crouches back further when I reach up to place squeeze up near her. She has neutral ears and eats the treat. I coax her closer with a trail of squeeze up and then place some in a dish. She jumps down to eat it. She lets me pet along her entire body as she eats, but does not lean into the touch, and when she finishes, she quickly retreats back to the perch. 6/3/26 FB20 Catnip is brought into the FRR. She has to be toweled and carried in, she is squirmy and we had to move fast. Once set down, she runs underneath the furniture. Another cat, Tom, comes to look at her, and she does not react. 6/4/26 FB25 She is initially hiding under the cat tree, but after I spend some time sitting and talking softly to the others, she suddenly comes out! She walks across the room, her tail and body are low but she seems curious as she stops to sniff me and the squeeze up. She explores for a few minutes and then retreats back to her hidey spot. 6/08/26 FB61 Lying on cat bed, body and face neutral with her pupils dilated and her ears forward. She allows petting along her head and cheeks while leaning in very slightly, her body otherwise tensing slightly. She appears to be more relaxed in this room and appears to be coming out of her shell. I try to reward with treats but she does not eat them. I talk to her softly and slow-blink before leaving the room. Doing well in Flushing Meowdow.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Affectionate,Graceful,Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: When Catnip first arrived at the shelter, she was fearful and shut down. When we were able to move her to one of our free roaming rooms where she had much more space and was around other cats, she flourished, becoming confident and very affectionate, with humans and with the other cats. Adopters should give her a slow, proper introduction to her new home to allow her time to settle in. Please relevant behavior flyers for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Other

Recommendations comments:: Catnip seems to enjoy the presence of other cats. She previously lived in a home with 12 other cats for many years and warmed up greatly in our cat free roaming room at the shelter. While she loves attention from humans, she would likely do great in a new home with other social cats.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/22/26 When the assessor approached the kennel, Catnip was partially hidden inside her box, her head ducking low. When the assessor opened the kennel door, she stayed frozen in place with dilatated pupils. The assessor offered Churu on a scratcher and spoke to her softly, to which she had no reaction. The assessor pet the sides of her face with the scratcher and then ran it gently over her back. Catnip's ears remained forward and she watched the scratcher with wide eyes, but did not react otherwise. She remained unmoving in a crouched position with a tight and tense body. 06/09/26 When the assessor enters the free roaming room, Catnip is sitting on a low perch. She has a calm expression and neutral ears. When the assessor reaches out their hand, Catnip presses her face into it, soliciting petting. She lies down as she lifts her head for more pets, purring loudly. The assessor sits on the floor and she comes over immediately, jumping gracefully from her perch and rubbing along the assessor for pets. When another cat comes over, she taps her nose to theirs curiously, keeping a loose body, then continues soliciting pets. When the assessor picks her up, she leans into the hold. She squirms after a few seconds and is set down. She never stops purring throughout the interaction and rubs her face on the assessor. She is quiet, gentle and enjoys attention. Catnip interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. No known history of behavioral problems. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience and demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.
