Animal Profile

Big Kahuna

Hello, my name is Big Kahuna. My animal id is #245760. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/17/2026.

Big Kahuna is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Big Kahuna arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon arrival Big Kahuna was noted to be anxious, but allowed handling and was social with staff. Big Kahuna has been showing signs of deterioration. He has been observed to be licking his kennel bars, and consistently high-pitch vocalizing in kennel. Additionally, Big Kahuna is noted to be reactive to dogs both in neighboring kennels and when on walks. With staff Big Kahuna remains social, allows all contact, and is treat receptive. Medically, Big Kahuna is apparently healthy.

His friends here are still learning about him - he adores attention but on his own terms, and he'll tell you clearly when he needs space. He can be protective of his food, toys, and bedding, and is happiest when given predictable, patient handling and clear, consistent training. He's a smart pup who's ready to learn with the right person. My Ideal Home A calm, adult-only home with a patient adopter who can spend time building trust and working on training. A consistent routine, positive reinforcement, and someone comfortable reading canine body language will help him thrive. A home without other pets is recommended given his preference for his own things; a secure yard or regular enrichment and walks will keep him happy and engaged. Leash Manners He is still learning leash skills and will benefit from short, structured walks using positive reinforcement. He does best with a calm handler who can work on loose-leash walking and predictable routines to build his confidence. Other Fun Facts He has a big personality and plenty of charm - he loves affection when he chooses it and shows sweet moments of curiosity and play. He's smart and ready to work with someone who will help him build confidence. Big Kahuna is currently at Manhattan Animal Care Center and is microchipped.

Summary:: 2/3/26: Big Kahuna greets another dog at the gate with a tense body and high stiff tail.

Summary (4):: 3/10/26: Big Kahuna is sleeping at the back of his kennel. He gets up and stands at the front with a neutral body and is easily leashed. He pulls hard out of the building and relieves himself outside. He checks in with the handler and allows petting. He continues to pull hard on the street. He sees another dog and pulls even harder towards them with his ears forwards and body tense. He allows leash clipping and returns to kennel willingly. 3/6/26: Big Kahuna has been observed to deteriorate in kennel. He has been "screaming extremely loud in his kennel", as well as "kennel fighting in the same pitch". (Note: he is in the back of the room". Additionally, Big Kahuna is very "reactive towards everything outside, especially dogs and was not able to be redirected". 3/5/26: Big Kahuna has been observed to high pitch vocalizing while the room is active.

Summary (5):: 3/5/26: Big Kahuna is at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body. When trying to leash, he begins to moderately bite the leash but stops after handler provides treats through the kennel bars which he takes gently. Once distracted with the treats, the handler begins leashing him and is successful in taking him out of the kennel. While exiting the room, Big Kahuna pulls moderately towards neighboring dogs in kennels, but handler shortens leash and uses distance when exiting the room. Big kahuna begins to pull hard through the hallway and down the stairs before exiting into the driveway where he sniffs the ground and immediately relieves himself. While relieving himself, a member of the public is standing near the building with two large dogs that begin barking at Big Kahuna but he shows no interest and walks toward the opposite direction. During the walk, he is walking with a moderate pull, continues to sniff the ground before noticing another member of the public with a large dog that begins pulling towards Big Kahuna. This time, Big Kahuna shows interest and pulls hard towards the dog, but the handler coaxes him with treats which he takes gently and is able to take him back inside the building and up the stairs where he continues to pull moderately. Once upstairs, Big kahuna is brought back inside the kennel with no issue. 3/4: Volunteer Note: Pulls on his leash during walk but found him very responsive. Big K is treat-motivated and readily sits for treats. Handler noted he was hyper alert to the various street goings on (delivery carts rolling by, street sweepers, etc.), and would benefit from a calm environment. 2/21/26: Big Kahuna is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down at the bars. He vocalizes in a high pitched tone towards another handler who is at the kennel of a neighboring dog. Handler later approaches and Big Kahuna stands in the kennel with a soft body. He is leashed with ease and walked out of the kennel. He pulls moderate to hard out of the room downstairs, towards the street. Handler clips the front of his harness which helps the pulls slightly until Kahuna sees a dog. He pulls hard towards them with a forward posture and a tense body. He is then switched back to a regular slip leash. Kahuna relieves himself a few times and engages with the handler. He sits for treats which he takes gently and poses for a few photos. Big Kahuna walks besides the handler with a soft body. As Kahuna is walked back to the shelter he begins pulling hard where he begins to gasp. This stops when he enters through the driveway. Inside, Kahuna sits at the handlers feet for treats. When he hears a staff member call "dog" as they exit the elevator he quickly whips around and pulls towards the dog. Handler keeps him on a short leash and steps back. Kahuna tries to push off the wall but he is brought into the elevator. Big Kahuna is brought back upstairs and pulls moderately back to the kennel where he is returned without issue.

Summary (6):: 2/20/26: Big Kahuna has been observed to lick the kennel bars and high pitch bark as the room is active. 2/14/26: Big Kahuna is standing at the front of his kennel. As the handler approaches, he remains with 4 paws on the floor. His body is loose. He takes treats and is leashed easily. He pulls hard on the way out of the building and needs his harness clipped. He has a neutral body on the street. There is a road block nearby and lots of cars honking, and he does not react. He balks on the way back into his kennel and needs to be muscled in 2/6/26: big Kahuna is lying down in back of kennel as handler approaches. Handler holds out a treat and he moves to front of kennel to get treat and handler leashes him. On walk he stays next to handler with slack in the leash. He takes treats and lean in to pets. He is returned with no issue. 2/5/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Big Kahuna is acting "subdued, almost shy". 2/3/26- Big Kahuna is laying down at the back of his kennel with a soft body, he stays laying down at handler unlocks his door. Handler is able to lasso the leash onto him and he slowly exits his kennel. He's taken to the play yard for a dog dog. While in the pen he is social with handler. When they scratch his neck, he rubs his head into handler's leg. When handler squats down and scratches his head/ neck, he rubs his body into handler's legs going between them. Handler scratches his side and he leans his body further into them. Handler stands up and offers treats but Big Kahuna shows no interest. He is social with other handler in pen. He is walked around the perimeter of the play yard, he sniffs around and relieves himself. He is easily leashed and returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 1/29/26: It is noted on the board that Big Kahuna has "huge improvement walking w/ front harness" 1/29/26: Big Kahuna greeted handler at front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He was easily leashed and removed from kennel with no issue. He relieved himself as soon as he was outside. He don’t take treats as handler offered them, but did accept pets and lean into handler. He was returned with no issues. 1/26/25: Big Kahuna was easily leashed and brought out to the yard. No issue clipping a drag leash to the front of his harness and removing the slip lead. He relieved himself and walked around the yard sniffing before marking again occasionally. He had a waggying tail and loose body and did not react to body pets when walking past the handler but also did not show much interest in interaction. He would come over to the hander when called but did not engage with treats. The handler prompted him to sit and pose for photos and he obliged, before having the slip lead placed, drag leash removed, and brought back to kennel without issue. 1/24/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Big Kahuna is pulling very hard to the point of hurting himself. (He has since been given a harness). 1/18/26: Handler approached the kennel, Big Kahuna is in the middle of the kennel with conflicting body language (hesitant to approach further, whimpering, mildly tense body). He accepts treats. When the kennel is unlocked and cracks open he begins pushing hard against the door directed at the opening. He is leashed with treat distractions. He exits the building while pulling hard. He eliminates then continues to walk pulling hard. He does not react to people that pass. He stares at a dog far away and gets tense, but does not fixate. He reenters the building while pulling, and enters the behavior room for his assessment (see assessment notes). He freezes and pulls back upon return to kennel and is muscled in.

Date of intake:: 1/17/2026

Summary:: Hypervigilant, loose body with handler. Tense body, high stiff tail, and vocalizes towards other dog

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Big Kahuna so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and resource guarding we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding; Kahuna has been obsvered to become tense and hover over the toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Kahuna's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Handling Sensitivity: Kahuna has been obsvered to head whip when his collar is grabbed and when the handler attempted to place the collar on him. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Kahuna to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. On Leash Reactivity: During intake Big Kahuna was obsvered to become tense with a forward body, high stiff tail, and vocalizes when seeing another dog. Similar behaviors have been obsvered while in care.
