Opie
Hello, my name is Opie. My animal id is #218986. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 7 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/31/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Opie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he has mild/moderate grade 2 dental disease.

He is gentle when playing, showing interest in chasing and pouncing on toys, as well as catching bugs or moths. While he enjoys interactive play a few times a week, he’s generally more focused on relaxation and comfort. Opie has a particular fondness for scratching rough surfaces like rope, wood, and cardboard. Once he feels comfortable with someone, he becomes very affectionate, loving to be pet and brushed. However, Opie is a bit skittish, especially around new people or loud environments. Sudden movements or loud children make him retreat and hide. He prefers a calm and quiet atmosphere, and while he’s not fond of treats, he’s a loyal companion once he builds trust.

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Opie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Opie is in the back of his cubby with dilated pupils and hisses. A scratch tool is used to greet him. He hisses, swats and spits and begins to urinate on himself. Opie is in the back of his cubby upon approach. He displays dilated pupils, he begins to move away hissing. His ears flattens and he presses up against the cubby wall. Scratch tool is introduced, he hisses and leans in to sniff it. When moved slowly to start petting he watches it hissing and moves away again. Opie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
