It caused a puncture on the skin and the client described it as a bite and release. Oreo is described to growl before and the bite is reported to occur during grooming (nails and bath) The 1st bite incident happened around 2022 while the owner was bathing Oreo and trimming her nails,they accidentally cut a nail too short, causing bleeding. Oreo growled and lunged at their wrist, where it broke skin with a small puncture and bled and the bite was a quick bite and release. The owner self treated the cut. The owner said after that incident Oreo has been more difficult to handle or touch when Oreo would be taken to the groomers or taken to the vet . Oreo would snap, bark hard, growl and bare teeth . Owner stated that Oreo would have to be sedated to get the nails cut . Owner mention when feeding their daughter at the table Oreo ran to the table to try to take the food and the daughter moved the plate and Oreo then snapped at the daughter but they moved move their hand before Oreo could bite her. The owner states that they yelled “No Oreo” at the dog and Oreo began to low growl and hard bark at the owner and they mentioned that they wouldn’t stop until the owner had to hit Oreo which Oreo retreated. During that time the owner mentioned they no longer felt comfortable with Oreo in the home and tried to rehome with their parent, but Oreo snapped at them too, and then sent the dog back. The owner mentioned they attempted again to trim her nails, they said that Oreo bared teeth when she saw the nail clippers and barked when the muzzle came out. The owner then left her alone and decided to try the groomers. The 2nd bite incident happened during the groomers the owner reported that the groomers did not want Oreo back and that she had bit one of the groomers. When admissions asked for more information on the bite the owner said that they never asked or looked into the situation. The owner mentioned last year they came into the home and there was a bag on the floor. Oreo was stuffing her face in the bag looking for what was inside. The owner said," Oreo get out the bag", Oreo stopped. After this the Owner was walking and then said Oreo snapped at their ankle, grazing her teeth. It did not break skin or bleed.The most recent attempted bite the owner mentioned that they were on the couch and Oreo was on the couch as well with their daughter. The owner mentioned Oreo and her daughter get along and were bonding until Oreo got off the couch and the daughter grabbed Oreo and picked her up to bring her back on the couch and Oreo snapped at her the bite did not break skin.

Date of assessment:: 8/20/2026

Summary:: Oreo was surrendered to the care center by the owner due to behavioral concerns in the prior home. It is noted by the owner that Oreo has bitten mostly due to nail trimming and grooming attempts; the owner stated that Oreo will growl before as warning. These incidents were bite and release that did draw blood but and they stated that the bites left no major damage. Due to the multiple bite history and handling sensitivity, we recommend an adult only home.

Summary (7):: 8/20/26 (KSV): Oreo is lying curled up at the back of his kennel when the handler approaches. He remains in the same position as the handler speaks to him with a soft voice. Oreo watches the handler with wide eyes and begins trembling. His head remains low and his body tightly curled, with no movement. Handler offers treats, but Oreo does not approach or show interest. When a treat is tossed closer to him and within reach, Oreo accepts it but still does not move toward the handler. Handler attempts to engage with him but he is not responsive. Oreo remains frozen in the same position, keeping his body curled. After some time handler tosses more treats for Oreo and ends interaction. 8/14/26: Oreo was at back of kennel lying down as handler approached. Oreo was avoidant of leash but handler was able to successfully leash him on second attempt and pull him from kennel. Handler took him to the back yard for his walk. Oreo was visibly shaking during walk and walked next to handler with a slack leash. Oreo stood still in the play pen for a few mins shaking before he started to walk around and sniff. After a few mins he was returned to his kennel with no issue. 8/11/26: Oreo is laying down as the handler approaches; they attempt to leash her, she dodges the leash a few times. Once it's on her and leash pressure is gently applied, Oreo thrashes and bites the leash once; the handler continues with the leash pressure for her to exit the kennel. As she is out the kennel, Oreo walks behind the handler with a very low body, slowly inching forward; the handler is able to bring her outside to the driveway. An unfamiliar staff member lowers their body and speaks to Oreo in a soft voice, but Oreo avoids them. She relieves herself; she also doesn't react to people or dogs. As the handler says "Dog", Oro finches. When walking back inside, Oreo with a bit more pace and at her normal height. As they're in front of her kennel, Oreo refuses to enter on her own; the handler gently applies leash pressure to bring her onto the kuranda bed underneath her kennel. As her front paws are on the bed, the handler clips the leash, but she quickly turns to bite the leash a few times immediately. Oreo enters her kennel and the handler removes their leash.

Date of intake:: 8/10/2026

Summary:: Fearful, tense and trembling

Date of initial:: 8/12/2026

Summary:: Trembling and frozen during exam, allowed pick up

ENERGY LEVEL:: Oreo is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to hard barking, growling, lunging, snapping, and biting children, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness: Oreo's previous owner states that she is rough when taking treats. Oreo has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Oreo to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Oreo's previous owner states that she has escalated multiple times to biting when handled. Such as snapping/biting when held, restrained, when her collar is grabbed, when startled, when pushed off furniture, and when her paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Oreo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Oreo's previous owner states that she is fearful when walking outside and will attempt to hard bark, growl, and lunge while outside. It is important to move slowly with Oreo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Resource Guarding/Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Escalating to biting is a behavior that Oreo has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Oreo's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Oreo and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Oreo's previous owner states that she is anxious in the home. If Oreo displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
