Summary:: 2/4/25: Donut greets another dog at the gate with a soft body but hackles raised. When the greeter moves away, Donut moves quickly in their direction.

Summary (5):: 04/30/25: Donut is observed to pancake and baulk outside of his room. A member of K9 witnesses this and assists in belly banding Donut. He moves away when initially attempting to bellyband but tolerates it and waddles into kennel.

Summary (6):: 4/26/25: It is reported that Donut will head whip when petted. He has grown more frantic, jumping up high on handlers, making contact with their mouth. 4/21/25: Donut is lying down in his crate. When handler approaches he stands up with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and walks out of the crate. Treats are tossed to him and he goes to eat them. A familiar handler gets into the elevator and he approaches them and sits at their feet. Handler begins feeding him treats. He then mouths handler's hand and handlers tosses treats away. Donut is taken to the street where he pulls very hard. He will stare at people that he walks past but does not bark or react towards them. When in the hallway the clip of handlers leash is hanging down. Donut stares at it with a neutral body and jumps up and mouths it. He then continues walking with the handler. Handler tosses treats and he is retuned to kennel without issue. 4/21/25- ACS have reported that Donut has been barking, lunging, pulling and fixating on everything while out on walks. He picks up various items on the street. 4/8/25: It was reported by ACS staff that Donut is behaving unlike himself and in an 'erratic' manner. He was street scavenging any, and all items on the street, including paper and small pieces of feces. At one point he spotted his reflection on a car door and began to hard bark and react to it. Handler had to pull him away which is when he began to mouth their pants and sleeves. 3/31/25: Donut was barking in his crate with a neutral body, when handler approaches the crate Donut is loose and wiggly with a wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out. In the elevator, Donut is jumping up towards handler socially and prancing around the elevator with a soft body. Donut is taken to the street where he pulls hard to moderate, regularly stopping to pick up garbage off the ground. Handler calls to him and keeps him away from the garbage. Donut picks up a stick and carries it with him. Handler stops for a moment and Donut approaches the handler with a soft wiggly body and a wagging tail. He leans against the handler's leg and allows petting on his side. Donut sees his reflection in a dark colored car and jumps forward and barks with a tense body. Handler quickly pulls him aside and he is walked back and returned to kennel without issue. 3/28/25: It is reported by staff that Donut will react towards dog when in the yard then jump onto handler.

Summary (7):: 3/26/25: Donut was found at the front of her crate with a neutral body. The handler was able to leash her with ease and bring her out of her crate. Before leaving the building, another handler and dog were entering, so the main handler pulled Donut to stand to the side. After the other handler and dog left, the handler and Donut walked towards the exit, where Donut barked once. While standing outside, Donut looks at a glass door and begins to hard bark. The handler pulled Donut away to begin the walk. During the walk, Donut pick up a stick, which she began to chew at. She dropped the stick at the handler’s command. While walking past a car, Donut began to hard bark again, pulling towards the car, most likely barking at her reflection. The handler pulled her away from the car to continue the walk. Donut was brought back to her kennel with ease. 3/26/25: ACS report that Donut will hard bark and lunge towards reflections of herself. 3/2/25 (late entry)- Donut is lying down at the back of his pop up crate with a soft body when handler approached. When handler open his kennel door he slowly gets up and comes to the front, he is easily leashed. Handler opens his door fully and he is hesitant to exit. Handler tosses a treat outside of his pop up and he comes out. He is taken for a street walk. He has a moderate pull to sniff various spots, he has no reaction to any stimuli. He allows handler to pet his head, neck, chest and back. He gently takes treats from handler's hand. He is easily clipped and returned to pop up crate without issue. 1/27/25: Donut was lying down in his kennel as the handler approached. He was nervous of approaching the front door and was uncomfortable being leashed. He would eat the treats the handler would toss for him, but then will return to the back of his kennel. The handler was able to lasso him but he refused to walk out of kennel due to being nervous of the loud barking dogs in the room. The handler tried tossing treats outside of his kennel but he started to shake. The handler gave him a second to settle by having the kennel door open and stepping to the side while still on lead. The handler had to apply leash pressure and he was able to come out. He was able to be taken outside for walk and was nervous of his surroundings. I would switch sides behind the handler and he would plant to the ground to stop walking. Once he received a few treats and pets on his back from the handler, he was comfortable being brought to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would approach both the handlers to receive scratches on his head due to his skin irritation issues. He also showed signs of an ear infection due to shaking his head a lot. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He was able to be brought back to his kennel and had to get treats tossed inside for him to walk in willingly

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Donut so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During his stay in the care center Donut has been observed to be fearful. Noted to have a tense body. It is important to always go slow and give Donut the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Donut would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Arousal: Donut has been observed to quickly become over aroused when being petted, he will begin to head whip and jump up on handlers making contact with his mouth. Donut should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Donut. Please see handout on Arousal.
