Stark
Hello, my name is Stark. My animal id is #230819. I am a desexed male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/30/2025.
Stark is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Stark in the care center has began to display arousal concerns while with staff in the care center. Stark has began to become over aroused while seeing dogs, becoming reactive, mounting staff , and has jumped up to mouth a staff member leaving two scrape marks and raised skin that did not break skin. Stark is social with staff, but having trouble settling in the care center. Medically, Stark is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form.Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Stark is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Stark was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home is unknown. Stark initially presented as social with staff and handlers during his playgroup sessions. As his stay progressed, Stark now demonstrated a low threshold for arousal with dogs and in the presence of people. His arousal manifests as mounting a handler walking him when another dog began reacting to him during a walk, grabbing the staff's arms to the point of leaving raised skin and red marks, as well as their clothing. On one occasion, a second handler had to assist a staff member walking him due to him grabbing their clothing by taking their lead and returning him to the kennel. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Stark be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Rescue partner that can address his challenges with a certified professional trainer that uses only positive reinforcment methods. A volunteer writes: Stark is a big boy, a loose marshmallow of a man, with a few big cow spots. Stark is a sweetie pie, who's personality really shines. We met him on a brutally hot day, but he indulges our cuddles just the same. Stark was found as a stray in the Bronx with just a collar. A good Samaritan found him and took him into the shelter for safety. Stark had been social and friendly with her and the staff members he greeted in the shelter. Stark has the honor of being a greeter dog at the shelter, so friendly he is used to test the other dogs with their sociability. He is bouncy and playful, wiggly but respectful of dogs who want more space from him.

Summary:: Due to Stark entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/09/25: Stark is utilized as a greeter dog. He displays high arousal, offering play bows before racing around the yard. Stark will become frustrated and increases in arousal, climbing the gate with a high curved tail. When his sessions are concluded he is returned to his kennel. 08/03/25 Due to lack of focus and increased arousal while in the pen, Stark is returned to kennel, unable to participate in play group. 7/25/25:Stark is utilized as a greeter dog. He displays loose and wiggly body language when greeting both novel male and female dogs. He solicits play with bouncy bows and stop/starts. when greeting a reactive dog at the gate, Stark walks away after the novel male growls and muzzle punches the gate. 07/06/25 Stark is used as greeter dog. At the gate Stark will greet several females with a bouncy, wiggly body and offers play bows. He maintains social body language when the other dogs are not interested. Towards the end of his session starks starts to explore the pens and seeks out attention from the handlers. 7/3/25: At the gate, Stark greets novel female with a soft body posture and ears back. He is respectful of her space and walks away. The female does not initate a greet so the session is concluded. When introduced to a novel male he greets with a loose, wiggly body. Once in the pen he solicits play with bouncy bows and body contact. Stark tolerates the novel male licks his muzzle. Stark will explore the yard when the novel male appears conflicted.
Summary (6):: 08/11/25: Stark is reported to mouth at handler's shirt when exiting kennel/kennel room. Stark is passed off to a second handler and he is retuned to kennel safely. A "Walk Me With Toy" sign is placed at kennel.
Summary (7):: 08/08/25: Stark is witnessed bucking like a wild horse while outside with ACS. He then tosses himself onto his side, refusing to get up and attempting to bite the leash, appearing to be in discomfort due to the leash harness. A behavior team member intervenes, releases him, and brings him to the assessment room to be properly fitted with an appropriate harness. After being fitted, Stark is walked back to his kennel with no further issues. 8/3/25: (1) Stark is at the front of his kennel barking as the handler approaches, and when approached, begins to whine. Stark is easily leashed and brought up the steps and into the play yard with no issue for a dog-dog greet. (See dog-dog summary for more details). Stark, during the greet, becomes aroused and jumps up at the handler, mouthing their arm with moderate-hard pressure, leaving 2 scrapes and raised skin on the handler's back of forearm, not breaking skin. Stark is brought back to the kennel with no issue and enters the kennel. (2): Later in the day, ACS staff report that Stark mounted a staff member when another dog became reactive to Stark when passing them as they exited the play yard. Once away from the other dog, the ACS was able to redirect him with treats and continue on the remainder of the walk. 07/31/25 (Play Group): When the handler approaches, Stark is sleeping at the back of his kennel. When the handler unlocks the kennel door, Stark will wake up immediately and approach the handler with a loose frame. Stark is escorted out of the care center to the play yards for an interaction. (Please refer to Ty's Dog-to-Dog summary in his behavior assessment) In the yard Stark is social with handlers, and accepts treats softly. Stark is escorted back to his kennel where he is kenneled, unleashed and safely secured. 07/25/25: Stark is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls moderately to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). Stark is social with handlers throughout his time in the yard and will jump up onto them in a social manner. He is easily refocused with tossed treats. After his session, Stark is returned to kennel safely. 07/03/25: Stark is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought out to the play yard to meet a playmate. A drag leash is placed on him, and he is set free to roam. When the first playmate arrives at the yard, Stark demonstrates a loose and wiggly body during the nose-to-nose gate greeting, but the playmate shows minimal interest. Stark is then introduced to a second playmate, and he maintains the same friendly and social body language. Once the session concludes, Stark is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend that he be placed in a home without children due to his arousal, mouthiness, and mounting behaviors. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Stark's increasing arousal concerns, the behavior department recommends he be placed with a New Hope placement partner who can provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Stark to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing him to new and unfamiliar situations, especially those that may cause him to tip over his low threshold for arousal. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Stark presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: During the Stark handling assessment, it is noted that with fast or raised movement, he will cower and flinch away. It is also noted that he will flinch away when petted around his neck/face. Training should focus on building trust through slow, predictable interactions and using positive reinforcement to create a sense of safety. Desensitization to touch and movement, paired with consent-based handling, will help Stark become more comfortable and reduce fear-based reactions. Please see the handout on handling/touch sensitivity/decompression period. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition | Low threshold for arousal: Stark, during a playgroup interaction, becomes aroused and jumps up at the handler, mouthing their arm with moderate-hard pressure, leaving 2 scrapes and raised skin on the handler's back of forearm, not breaking skin. He has also begun mounting handlers during walks. Please see the handout in Arousal and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition.
