King Julian
Hello, my name is King Julian. My animal id is #237733. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/26/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKing Julian is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During his intake, he was loose bodied at first, but would head whip when touched, and escalated to snapping at the microchip scanner and growling during vaccines. He has tolerated handling throughout his stay. On leash, he has been observed to be reactive towards dogs and people. Observed to lunge with raised hackles, and pull very hard towards dogs with a tense body. He is not easily redirectable despite handlers creating space and distance from the trigger. Medically, King Julian is finishing up treatment for CIRDC but is otherwise healthy.

Summary (6):: 10/10/25: King Julian is standing quietly with neutral body as handler approaches kennel. King Julian takes a treat, momentarily retreats from leash but is leashed with ease after sniffing the leash. King Julian exits kennel with neutral body, minimal pulling. A secondary handler accompanies for walk to take photos and video. On elevator, King Julian sits for treats and photos. Upon exiting elevator, King Julian quickly pulls toward jumps up with neutral body and briefly mouths the lower jacket area of the secondary handler. (Undetermined if he may have been going for the treat pouch that was also located around the waist of the secondary handler.) King Julian recovers to neutral body. King Julian sees a LMB exits MACC driveway, pulls toward with tense body, King Julian is kept on a short leash due to previously noted reactivity, he loses interest as distance increases to about 20 feet. King Julian continues to be treat motivated with both handlers, takes treats for sit commands and at times is loose bodied. King Julian engages with secondary handler for photos and videos, also begins to pull toward the secondary handler with moderate leash pressure. This stops when the secondary handler begins to distance themself. King Julian relieves himself, walks back to MACC with light pulling, neutral body, and re-enters kennel without issue
Summary (7):: 9/29/25: It is reported on the behavior board that King Julian is reactive to wheelchair. 9/30/25: King Julian is observed to become tense with a high stiff tail when spotting another dog in the yard. He is not easily redirectable and remains vigilant and tense afterwards. 9/28/25: King Julian is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he lunges towards an unfamiliar handler in the driveway and is unable to be redirected with treats or toys. He would continue to look at the handler while exciting the driveway. He then continues to pull hard ahead on the walk. He becomes tense with his hackles raised while trying to pull towards a dog nearby by. He has to be taken across the street due to not being able to be redirected with treats or toys. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would lip lick with a tense body and flinched when being collard. He then became comfortable being petted and would take treats. Please see behavior assessment for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and has to be muscled in due to not wanting to go inside

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on King Julian so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that King Julian has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that King Julian should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: King Julien was observed to snap at the MC scanner and growl during vaccines. It is important to move slowly with Julien, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: During his walk King was observed to lunge towards people with raised hackles and will pull hard towards dogs with a tense body. These behaviors were not able to be redirected and even after creating space he continues to turn and react. Julien will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
