Caramel Apple
Hello, my name is Caramel Apple. My animal id is #238464. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/13/25 Caramel Apple is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Caramel Apple will approach the gate appearing nervous, trembling as he sits softly, remaining present along the gate line. As the male dog growls at him, Caramel Apple will lip curl but not move away willingly, still sitting, remaining present. Caramel is moved away. Caramel Apple is introduced to a novel female dog at the gate where his behavior is the same. During this interaction, Caramel Apple doesn't lip curl due to him being ignored. He remains present, still appearing nervous. He is returned to kennel, concluding all interactions. 10/06/25 Caramel Apple is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Summary (7):: 10/25/25: Caramel Apple is lying in the middle of kennel as handler approaches. He lifts his head slightly but otherwise does not engage. Due to Caramel Apple being under the weather, he is left in kennel to rest. 10/23/25: Caramel Apple is observed refusing to walk for ACS staff and attempting to pull back to kennel. 10/21/25: Caramel Apple is laying at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He will get up and retreat to the back of the kennel as the handler opens the door. Caramel Apple is not taking treats and will not come forward when the handler crouches down to coax him. They place the rope gently over his head and he is toweled by another handler and carried out of the kennel. Caramel Apple will then walk to the behavior office with a tucked tail, pinned ears, a furrowed brow and wide eyes. In the room he is clipped to a drag leash and allowed to roam around. The handler offers him a treat on the snuffle mat and a lick mat but Caramel Apple will just walk around with his tail still tucked, his head on a swivel as he listens to other dogs barking outside the room. Once his kennel is clean, Caramel Apple is returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 10/5/25: (assessment) Caramel Apple is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. As the handler opens the door and presents the leash, Caramel Apple will back away briefly but the handler coaxes her forward and is able to leash him. Caramel Apple walks to the behavior office where he is fitted with a collar. (see assessment for more info) Caramel Apple is avoidant of the handlers in the room, sitting by the desks, displaying whale eye and lifting his paw. He is switched from his drag leash to the slip lead and he pulls mildly to his kennel where he is secured safely.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Anxiety: Caramel Apple was described by her finder as shy and anxious, though she began to warm up and show affectionate behavior over time. In care, she continues to display timid behavior but responds positively to a slow and gentle approach. These signs suggest she benefits from patient interactions and a calm environment to build trust and confidence. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety.
