Animal Profile

Foxy

Hello, my name is Foxy. My animal id is #253886. I am a female brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/7/2026.

Foxy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Foxy displays high level of arousal and reactivity including persistent barking, wailing, screeching, leash biting, jumping in kennel, and vocalizing for prolonged periods of time while on walks. She has also displayed reactivity toward other dogs, including barking, lunging, growling, and pulling when they are in view. Foxy is social with handlers, seeks out affection, leans into petting, and can be redirected from triggers at times but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Foxy came into care with facial wounds we have treated and she recently recovered from CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

My medical notes are...

Spay/Neuter Waiver - Temporary Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with WOUNDS, and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery, you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

Summary (7):: 5/31/26: Foxy is at the front of kennel jumping up on the door and barking as the handler approaches. She is leashed with treats and will attempt to kennel fight but is ushered out of room quickly. Once outside she continue to screech and vocalize as she pulls hard down the hallway. When passing a kennel room, Foxy will turn around to bite the leash but will then get her paw stuck on the leash and begins to thrash as she is vocalizing. The handler is then able to lower the leash so she is able to remove her paw and she will continue to pull back towards the kennel room while screeching. She will pull hard throughout the walk and bark at any dog that is within sight. When returning to kennel, there is a lot of dog traffic and Foxy is continuously vocalizing and screeching. She is then returned to kennel where she is secured safely. She will continue to vocalize and bark as the handler exits the kennel room. 5/31/26: Foxy is observed to vocalize and screech throughout the length of the hallway leading to outside and is reported to leash bite resulting in her paw getting stuck in the leash. Foxy continued to vocalize until outside, which she continued to do so as well intermittently. 5/30/26: Foxy is noted to pull and growl towards other dogs in crate. In kennel she is noted to jump in front of her kennel she displayed a flushed face, and screeching in kennel. 5/20 (BA): Foxy is lounging in her bed when a handler approaches. She comes to the front with a wiggly body and is easily leashed. She maintains her wiggly body, jumping into laps, pressing into petting. Once her assessment is complete, Foxy returns to her kennel without issue. 5/19/26: Foxy is at the back of her kennel on her bed as the handler approaches. She is coaxed to the front of the kennel with treats and is then leashed with ease. Foxy will walk out of kennel slowly and will walk to the play yard, sniffing around. In the play yard, she will lean into petting and will re-engage after consent checks. After a while, she is returned to kennel with no issue and secured safely. 5/14: Foxy persistently barks and wails in her crate throughout the day. She is given a long-lasting chew, but she tries to cover it in her bedding before returning to wailing. When covering her crate to reduce visual stressors, she pulls the covers in. 5/11/26 Foxy was sitting up in kennel when handler approached. She was leashed easily and walked outside at a moderate pace. At the sight of other dogs, she would lunge and bark. She could be redirected and was returned to kennel afterward.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Foxy jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Anxiety. Anxiety: Foxy began to display heavy panting and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Other/bite victim: Police officers noticed a stray dog with facial wounds. Upon examination it was noted by medical that there were bite wounds along the face and neck. The exam states "facial region has moderate erythema with scatter puncture wounds and superficial abrasions extending from the top of the head to the ventral neck region. It is unclear what kind of animal bit her because Foxy came in as a stray. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Foxy is noted to kennel fight in the care center pulling ang growling towards other dogs.Teach Foxy alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" cue when she sees a trigger. Consistent training and positive reinforcement will help reduce her reactivity over time. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
