Dent
Hello, my name is Dent. My animal id is #220145. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 10 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 2/8/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormDent is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Medically Dent has ear mites and mild dental disease.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Dent came to us when his person passed away. Brought in with many other cats, his transition to shelter life seems to come in fits and starts. For example, when Dent knows we're not around trying to say hi, he relaxes a little more. With soft eyes and stretched paws, he minds his business and makes the most of his time with a thoughtful nap. When we interrupt his me-time with our attempts to say hello, however, Dent has become grumbly and nervous. Hopping away from our outstretched hands to retreat to his den or perch right on top, Dent takes the initiative to create some space and make himself feel more comfortable. While not the most conducive to building a friendship, I applaud a cat who knows what they want and even more so if what they want is a little space time. Dent's a bright and sparkly independent guy who deserves another chance.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Upon intake the cat allowed handling to be done, the cats were fearful at first.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Dent was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake the cat allowed handling to be done, the cats were fearful at first.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/13/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. I do not push hands on interaction today to avoid creating a negative association with myself. I leave some offerings of catnip and treats and he hisses while remaining in his den. Hopefully he eats or plays later when the room is empty. Needs time to adjust. 2/20/25 FB79 Laying in his bed with a relaxed face and body, Dent has his paws tucked away and soft almond eyes when I approach. However, he quickly jumps to the top part of his kennel with a mid body and tail and hisses when I speak to him softly. He shows no interest in the treats that I toss up there with him and backs away hissing when I slowly introduced a pointer tool to pet. 2/23/25 FB79 Today, Dent displayed similar behaviors as the previous enrichment note. Did not allow any contact with low growl/grumbling. 2/27/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Dent peaks his head out when he hears me approach and has soft eyes with forward ears; when i lift the den cover he lays in a relaxed/neutral body. Dent does lean in to sniff the treats that i offer but has no interest. He also sniffs my hand when i bring it closer but quickly retreats inside when i attempt to pet.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Dent was in his cat den as the assessor approached, completely hidden from view. Dent growled when spoken to and he hissed as the kennel door opened. Dent swatted the assess-a-hand as it reached forward - he reached his paw out to swat it with claws extended before it could reach him from within his den. Pick up was not attempted at this time to avoid further escalation. Dent is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
