Luna Mae
Hello, my name is Luna Mae. My animal id is #210535. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/30/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Luna Mae is on the at-risk list for behavioral concerns. Luna Mae came to us an owner surrender and was noted to have some concerning behaviors. Luna Mae is reported to be highly reactive to small animals and dogs on leash. She escaped their yard and bit a neighboring dog. Unknown the severity of the bite but it was reported the bite did not cause serious injury. She was known to escape her crate often as well and give clear signs of resource guarding high value items. In care, Luna Mae has allowed all handling and is very social with staff. She has shown increased anxiety while in care including rushing back to her kennel and destruction tendencies in kennel. Luna Mae would benefit for a low-stress environment where she can receive more positive-reinforcement training. Medically, Luna Mae is healthy.

Meet Luna Mae, a charming 3-year-old, 36-pound petite girl with a sweet personality and a few quirks. While Luna Mae has shown some behavior concerns in her previous home, she has proven to be very tolerant and affectionate with our staff. She enjoys leaning in for pets and loves treats and toys, though she prefers to keep them to herself unless traded. Luna Mae is leash-reactive and thrives best as the only pet in an experienced, adult-only home where her new family understands her needs and can help her feel safe. With her love for treats and toys, Luna Mae's heart is easy to win over. If you're ready to invest time and patience into a unique and loving companion, Luna Mae could be your perfect match.

In the yard, a drag leash is placed on her and she sniffs around the yard. Staff approaches her and gives her pets on her head and body. Luna Mae continues to explore on her own before approaching a staff member. The staff member asks her to sit and she does so. She is rewarded with a treat and accepts it softly. She walks away and when she comes back over to the staff, she sits in front of them. They give her pets on her chin and neck. Luna Mae closes her eyes and leans into all her pets. When it is time to go inside, she walks over and stands at the gate. She is leashed and brought back to her kennel.

She was brought outside for a walk where she remained relaxed but on alert of her surroundings. Handler used treats to get Luna into her kennel which she gave no issues. 09.30 - Medical handling - Luna was at the front of her kennel with a loose body and wagging her tail. It took a few attempts to get the leash over her head but she remained relaxed the whole time. Luna pulled slightly on the leash walking out of her kennel and down the hall.
