Gucci

Hello, my name is Gucci. My animal id is #247748. I am a desexed male brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/14/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Gucci is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Gucci displays severe leash biting, grabbing, tugging, and vocalizing, with difficulty disengaging even with treats or toys becoming increasingly more aroused. Gucci is able to offer cued behaviors and briefly engage with toys and treats with staff, but will only take reinforcers inconsistently to manage her leash biting. Medically, Gucci is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary (6):: 4/5/26: Gucci is at the front of her kennel and leashed with treats when approached. Gucci walks out into the hallway and immediately begins to start jumping up high and leash biting, tugging on the leash and vocalizing. Gucci is refocused with treats being brought to her nose and briefly eats them off the floor before turning around and leash biting again. The handler grabs a toy the took out of the bin and she will hold the rope toy intermintendly outside, letting go of it before leash biting again as the handler had to toss the rope toy several times to refocus her far enough to be brought to the yard. Gucci drops the toy in middle of the two play yards and is put onto a drag leash, where she leash bites again but the handler lets it go and begins to try and refocus her with more treats. Briefly, Gucci engages with the handler and offers a sit, and is rewarded for increased durations and not grabbing the leash. Gucci will engage for some time before grabbing the leash, running away with it and shaking it. Gucci is refocused with a squeak noise off of the slip lead and has to be kept away at a distance due to her not being able to be refocused by the treat scatters. Gucci is leashed again, and brought out of the play yard where she leash bites intensely, vocalizing, tugging the leash and jumping high to regrip the leash. Gucci is again attempted to be refocused with the toy all the way back inside but will only focus on it briefly each time and goes back to leash biting, treats are also not working to refocus her. Gucci when inside grabs another part of the leash in her mouth, leaving the handler only about a foot of leash to hold. Gucci has to be air horned off the leash for the handler to have a secure grip to keep her from getting loose. Gucci startles, lets go and immediately begins to leash bite until all the way back in her kennel where she briefly eats a treat offered but tries to grab the leash coming out of her kennel several times.

Summary (7):: 3/29/26: Gucci is reported to tug intensely at the leash as soon as he exits the kennel and when coming back into the Care Center from a walk. He is able to be redirected with treats when they are presented close to his face and is then treat trailed to keep his attention off the leash. 3/17/23 (assessments): Gucci is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He is leashed with ease and will pull moderately to the behavior office where his collar is clipped. Gucci will run around the room and sit as he approaches handlers to solicit treats, his hind end wagging as he is sitting. (see assessment for more information) After the session, Gucci is leashed and returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 3/16/26: Gucci is at front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and escorted to behavior room. In the room Gucci is social with handlers that are present and jumps socially on handlers. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 3/15/26: Gucci is jumping up at his kennel door as handler approaches. He tries to shove his way out of kennel as the handler opens the door. He is able to be leashed with ease when the handler offers him cheese through their leash loop. Once leashed, he pulls on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose body as he would constantly jump up on the handlers to receive treats and pets. He is able to engage in a snuffle mat and would sit for treats. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 3/15/26: Gucci is jumping at his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump at the door and tries to shove his way out by sticking his paws through the door gap as the handler attempts to leash him. He then begins to try to grab the handler’s leash and begins to growl and snap at their hand. Due to him becoming frustrated, the handler closes the door and locks the kennel before walking away and ending the interaction.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Gucci is noted to jump up on people often. Reinforcing calm alternative behaviors such as sitting for attention can help decrease jumping and promote more appropriate interactions. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Gucci is noted to mouth assessor sleeve. Redirecting his mouth to appropriate items and reinforcing gentle, controlled engagement will help improve his bite inhibition. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Low threshold for arousal/Leash-biting/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Gucci is noted to leash bite in the prior home and in the care center. Gucci snaps and growls towards a handler's hand when attempting to leash bite.Training should prioritize structured, low-arousal leashing routines, high-value redirection, and gradual desensitization to leash handling to reduce biting and improve handler safety. Please see the handout on Low threshold for arousal/Leash-biting/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
