Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Stella is noted in the prior to guard Toys, Food, Treats (bones, rawhides, etc.) and will have a tense body or hovers over them. Training should focus on trade-up exercises, teaching “drop it” and “leave it,” and preventing direct confrontation over valued items. Building positive associations around human approach can help reduce guarding behavior. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. When leashed Stella would thrash lightly, whale eye and had a tightly tucked tail, when staff would stop walking her she would hard bark. Recommendations include slow, low-pressure handling, counter-conditioning with high-value treats, and gradual desensitization to leashing and movement to help her feel safer and more predictable in handling routines. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Anxiety: Stella is noted to have General anxiety and will (paces, whines, unable to settle).Predictable transitions, and positive reinforcement for calm behavior can help reduce overall anxiety. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Stella is noted to growling/hard barking and will lunge to Large dogs, Moving objects (bikes, skateboards, cars, etc.), cats, small dogs. Training should include controlled distance work, counter-conditioning to triggers, and reinforcing calm behavior before she becomes overstimulated. Management tools such as a front-clip harness can assist in maintaining safety during walks. Please the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Stella is noted to hard pull while on walks. We recommend using appropriate equipment such as a front-clip harness can help improve control and reduce pulling.
