Aria
Hello, my name is Aria. My animal id is #241316. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/9/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Aria is on the at-risk list due to behavioral concerns. Aria was returned to the Care Center due to separation anxiety reported in foster. Upon arrival, Aria was noted to be fearful but has warmed to staff. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Aria is showing signs of deterioration in kennel. Aria has been reported to persistently jumping and spinning in kennel; as well as vocalizing and finger-painting kennel walls at times. With staff, Aria remains social, allows all contact, and is treat receptive. Medically, Aria is noted to have dental disease but is otherwise apparently healthy.

Since I'm a long stay pup, my adoption fee has been reduced! Visit me today to find out my favorite treats and how you can take me home! My Ideal Home Aria is looking for a quiet, adult-only home with someone who understands fearful or anxious dogs and is committed to using positive, reward-based training. She'll thrive with a patient adopter who allows her to set the pace for introductions, keeps routines consistent, and gives her time to decompress. A calm environment with limited foot traffic will help her feel safe and secure. A Volunteer writes: The best word to describe her is polite - a truly well-mannered girl. Aria was easy to bring in and out of her kennel. She enjoys affection and cuddles, but asks for them quietly and politely. In the backyard, she had a relaxed, chill vibe. She ignored a pigeon in the same pen and remained calm throughout. She takes treats very gently and knows "sit," "paw," and "other paw." We tried playing fetch, but she did not retrieve the ball and did not seem very interested in continuing the game. Overall, she was easy to handle and a pleasure to spend time with. My foster writes : Looking for a pup with personality, charm, and some serious ear game? Meet Aria - a sweetheart with stand-up bunny ears, a soft smile when she's happy, and the kindest eyes you'll ever see. Here's why you'll fall for her instantly: • Those ears! Straight-up bunny style - always alert, always adorable • Cuddle machine: Whether it's morning snuggles or movie night, Aria is all in on quality couch time • Polite + house-trained: She's fully potty trained and can hold it all night, even outside of the crate • Hugs on demand: Aria gently jumps up to wrap you in the softest dog hug • A little quirky: She's obsessed with mirrors and loves to keep an eye on you through reflections (we suspect she's a little genius) • Happy soul: When Aria's tail wags and her smile shows, hearts fully melt This girl is equal parts affectionate, curious, and clever - and she's ready to give her heart to someone who'll love her back.

Date of intake:: 11/9/2025
Summary:: Growled at handlers initially, warmed up and began seeking contact
Date of initial:: 11/9/2025
Summary:: Tense body for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: Aria is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Aria's previous owner states that she will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Aria's previous owner states that she will growl initially towards strangers. Aria was observed to have a tense body and lip licking when interacting with handlers. During intake she was obsvered to growl towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Aria, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Aria was recently returned from foster due to her separation anxiety. It was reported that Aria would bark persistently when alone, break out of her crate, and in one instance she scratched through the foster's door. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. Anxiety: Aria was observed to whine during her assessment. If Aria displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
