Chowder

Hello, my name is Chowder. My animal id is #242236. I am a desexed male cream dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/21/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chowder is at risk due to behavioral reasons. He has been observed to snap, hard bark, snarl, and bare teeth when staff interact or attempt to leash him. With select handlers Chowder is able to be coaxed out of kennel and is receptive to treats. However when handler attempted to place a collar on him he escalated to snapping and bit them on the arm. This bite did not break skin. Medically Chowder has chronic pyoderma, dental disease, and has developed pneumonia due to CIRDC infection. Chowder is receiving injectable medication for treatment due to low appetite.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 11/21/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: Yes

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history

Date of assessment:: 11/30/2025

Summary:: **11/30/25**: When brought into the assessment room Chowder was obsvered to be tense and anxious. Noted to have a tense body, and was whining while in the assessment room. Chowder retreats from the collar when the handler attempts to place it on him. During the second attempt Chower vocalizes and snaps making contact with the handlers arm. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Chowder is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time. **11/23/25**:Chowder is highly fearful in the Care Centers. He was observed to hard bark, tense, growl, snarl, bare his teeth and snap at staff. Due to these behaviors, Chowder will not get a handling assessment.

Summary (6):: 11/30/25: Chowder is standing in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed on a pre-clip with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a neutral body frame and has no reactions to dogs or people as he explores around. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump up on the handlers while whimpering. He would back away while whimpering as the handler attempts to collar him. He then snaps at the handler’s hand after eating a treat and still refuses to be collared. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 11/23/25: Chowder is sitting up at the front of the kennel, the leash is presented and he bites and holds the leash. Handler takes high value treats and Chowder is receptive. He is slowly coaxed out of the kennel and brought to the backyard. He wanders slowly around a portion of the yard. Chowder is then coaxed back inside with high value. He is then returned to kennel without issue. 11/22/25: Chowder is at the back of his kennel, sleeping as handler approaches. As handler begins to unlock the kennel, he would slowly get up and attempt to lunge towards the handler. Handler is then able to successfully lasso him, handler would then open the kennel door and swing it open, Chowder would slowly follow out after mild leash pressure is used. He would then walk alongside the handler out to the yard, while in the yard he would sniff around and relieve himself. Chowder would remain aloof throughout the walk and wouldn't react towards any passing stimuli. He is then clipped shortly after and easily returned to his kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chowder so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
