Animal Profile

Cheese

Hello, my name is Cheese. My animal id is #209964. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/12/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cheese is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Cheese in care has been struggling to acclimate to the kennel environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Cheese has began to kennel fight intensely leaving and entering kennel, lunging and hard barking at dogs, and outside is reactive to other dogs by pulling hard on leash, having to be refocused each time, and maintains a heavy pant with a difficulty to settle on his own. Medically, Cheese is Apparently healthy.

Medically, Cheese is Apparently healthy. Cheese arrived at the care centers as a stray. Cheese in care has been struggling to acclimate to the shelter environment and has began leash biting in kennel when trying to remove him from kennel, and kennel fighting with neighboring dogs when leaving/returning to kennel, making it difficult to walk him safely. Cheese is also on leash reactive towards other dogs, but with staff is a very vocal, social dog who is having a hard time acclimating despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. As a result, we recommend Cheese is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Summary:: Due to Cheese entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/18/24 Cheese's dog-to-dog interaction could not be conducted due to his intense dog and kennel reactivity. Being he couldn't not exit the building due to said reactivity, he is returned to kennel.

Summary (5):: 09/27/2024: Cheese comes towards the front of his kennel when the handler approaches, with a loose and wiggly body. Cheese is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel where he displays a loose body rubbing into the the first handler. Cheese is taken out on a walk where he relieves himself and then is taken to the play yard where he walks pass a dog in the first pen with a neutral body. Cheese is taken toward the first pen where he allows the handler to attach a drag leash to his collar. Cheese begins to engage with the first and secondary handler in play taking spray cheese and playing with the toys offered to him. Cheese begins to respond to the cues 'Sit, bark, and paw" he is give spray cheese. After a while cheese is released with the slip lead and taken back into the center where he begins to kennel fight with passing kennels he refocused when a squeaker toys is used, he is placed into his kennel without issue. 09/26/24: Cheese is standing at the front of his kennel and will allow handler to leash him with ease and he will be brought out of his kennel and taken out for a walk. While outside Cheese will display a neutral frame while walking on a loose leash with novel handler. As Cheese and handler are walking cheese will become reactive to another dog across the street, handler will shorten Cheese’s leash and process up the heal where cheese will explore and relieve himself, cheese will remain neutral for the duration of his walk and will be escorted back to the care center and returned to his kennel safely.

Summary (6):: 9/21/24: Cheese is at the front of his kennel barking when the handler approaches him and is coaxed with spray cheese into the leash. Cheese is brought out of his kennel where he attempts to pull towards the other dogs but is navigated out of the passing rooms and into the hallway. Cheese pulls hard outside and begins to pull towards other dogs he sees, and throughout the walk continues to pull hard, marking different areas and unable to settle with a heavy pant. The handlers begins to interact with Cheese as he offers sit cues and begins to demand bark at the handlers. The handlers continue this for a couple minutes and on the way back to the shelter, another dog from an apartment complex exits suddenly next to Cheese and Cheese begins to lunge, hard bark and snarl at the other dog, causing the handler to have to put Cheese in-between there legs to control him. Cheese settles when at a far distance away from the dog and is brought back to kennel where he pulls very hard, again attempting to kennel fight neighboring dogs. 9/20/24: Cheese is at the kennel jumping ip hard barking at the handler. Cheese when the kennel door is opened begins to push his head out and hard barking at the kennel door. Cheese is coaxed with treats initially and takes them very hard, and when seeing the rope begins to tug the leash intensely, dropping it when the handler opens the door more. Spray cheese is used to coax Cheese and he is leashed and immediately pulls hard towards the other dogs, lunging and hard barking at every dog coming out of the room, along with the smaller dogs in the small dog adoption room. Once outside, Cheese sees more dogs and begins to pull hard towards them, having to be refocused with treat each time. Cheese is taken on a walk on quiet street, he explores his surroundings while panting heavily and unable to settle. Cheese begins to mark random objects on the walk and use the bathroom, where he pulls slightly less but still maintains a heavy pant. Cheese is social when coaxed by the staff member, leaning his rear into petting but walking away on his own. Cheese is brought back to kennel where he kennel fights along the same spots intensely and has to be put into kennel quickly.

Summary (7):: 09/19/24: Cheese is in kennel jumping up at the glass hard barking. Handler will offer Cheese treats and he will accept and eat the treats extremely fast and handler is unable to leash while he is eating the treats, handler will offer a soft toy and cheese will grab the toy and when handler attempts to leash him as he's pulling on the toy, Cheese will let the toy go and immediately grab the leash as handler has already landed it over his head, handler will close kennel door and cheese will let the leash go and will be brought out for his walk. 9/18/24: Cheese was barking and jumping on kennel door along with multiple other dogs in the kennel room. Cheese bit onto handler's leash and pulled it out of their hand. Cheese dropped the leash and handler retrieved it from kennel. A second handler distracted Cheese with spray cheese while handler 1 leashed him. Immediately upon exiting kennel, Cheese began kennel fighting with multiple neighbors, shoving his muzzle into the bottom of their kennels. Handler used directional leash pressure to move him out of the room, tripping over him as he got under foot while resisting. Cheese pulled towards the first kennel in SDA. Since the purpose of taking Cheese out of kennel had been for a dog-dog interaction, handler opted to return him to kennel. He continued attempts to kennel fight, so handler used directional leash pressure to swiftly return him to kennel along with their slip leash. A second handler retrieved the leash with a hook. 9/17: Staff report Cheese biting and stealing their leads when attempting to remove him from kennel. - 09/16/24: Cheese is barking at the front of kennel as handler approaches and displays a loose, wiggly body. He is leashed with ease and pulls hard to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). Cheese is social with handlers throughout his time in the room and will bark to solicit attention and treats. Cheese is leashed and returns to kennel safely. 9/15/24: Cheese was barking in kennel when handler approached. He had a loose body and wagging tail. He was leashed with ease and pulled moderately on the way to the BA room for his assessment. Cheese allowed handler 2 to collar him and handler 3 to remove his harness. He was returned to kennel with ease

Date of initial:: 9/14/2024

Summary:: tense during exam; initially taking treats, needed defensive handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cheese so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cheese's hard pulling and touch sensitivity, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. SINGLE-PET HOME: Due to a high level of dog reactivity shown while in care, we recommend that Cheese is the only pet in the home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: During Cheese's handling assessment, he head whipped when his upper neck area is touch, indicating he is uncomfortable with touch in that area. Cheese may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity and Decompression Period. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Cheese in care has displayed a high level of dog reactivity both on leash and kennel fighting with other dogs when leaving and returning to his kennel. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. Anxiety: Cheese is highly anxious in care, panting heavily during interaction and pulling very hard on leash. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to help alleviate his anxiety. See handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash-biting: Cheese when frustrated through the barrier, will begin to bite as his leash intensely. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Strength/leash pulling: Cheese is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
