Animal Profile

Maya

Hello, my name is Maya. My animal id is #250020. I am a female merle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - cannot afford vet bill.

Maya needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is a young, sweet dog with chronic bloody diarrhea and an ulcerated colon. She needs a surgical consultation for colonoscopy, biopsy and culture to develop a treatment plan.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

My medical notes are...

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have minimal history on Maya so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Children (Under 13): Due to Maya's fearful disposition and capacity for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Staff have reported that Maya is fearful and can become tense or tremble during handling and has escalated to snapping at the leash when attempting to leash her at times. Maya should never be forced to interact, she should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people she finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Maya. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease Maya's quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
