Sevyn
Hello, my name is Sevyn. My animal id is #267583. I am a female brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/10/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form Meet Sevyn! 🐾 Sevyn is a sensitive girl who needs time, patience, and understanding to feel safe with new people. She is currently experiencing significant fear in the shelter environment and is not yet comfortable with handling. Her previous owners shared that Sevyn takes time to warm up to unfamiliar people, and the stress of her current surroundings is making it especially difficult for her to settle in. Once Sevyn feels safe and builds trust, her previous owner describes her as extremely loyal, caring, and very smart. Sevyn will need a patient, compassionate adopter who understands that trust cannot be rushed. Giving her space, respecting her boundaries, and allowing her to approach on her own terms will be essential to helping her feel secure.

Summary:: Sevyn has been highly fearful in care, spending most of the day shaking in fear on her kuranda bed. She is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Sevyn is a very social, affectionate, active, and playful female dog who loves being around people and prefers to spend most of her time with them. Her previous owner describes her as extremely loyal, caring, and very smart. Sevyn knows several cues, including sit, stay, crawl, catch, bring it to me, lay down, cage, eat, and stop. She is crate-trained and does well in her XL crate for up to three hours. Sevyn goes on walks three to four times a day for about 10 minutes each and may pull mildly to moderately on the leash. She is fearful and uncomfortable with bathing and brushing, so grooming can be challenging for her. Sevyn is also nervous about getting into or riding in the car, but she tolerates it. Above all, Sevyn loves anything that involves spending time with people and enjoys being close to those she cares about.
Summary (6):: 10/15: Sevyn is on her kuranda bed curled up. Handler attempts to toss the slip lead over her and is halfway secures. She is able to slip out but comes forward in kennel. The slip lead is secured and she walks out of kennel keeping her body low to the ground. Once outside, she pulls into the yard and is kept on leash. Her body tense and she is wary of handlers, watching them intensely. They go on a walk and when in front of the parking lot she sees a person standing by the car. She freezes and hard stares at handler. The handler walks her away from the person and turns back as soon as there is space. When returning, she balks at the gate refusing to walk forward, her front half lowered. They go around the building again and in through the lot. She has to be pulled through the door to the building. She freezes at kennel front before entering on her own and the slip lead maneuvered over her head.
Summary (7):: 10/14: Sevyn comes forward on approach, and the slip lead is presented. She will bare her teeth each time it comes close to her. Handler tries several times to secure her, but she evades the leash, snapping at it. She eventually retreats to her bed and urinates. She readily transfers to the next kennel for cleaning. 10/12: The transfer door is opened to the empty kennel next to Sevyn. Vienna sausages are rolled into the kennel and staff attempt to coax her over to the other side. She is shaking on her kuranda bed. The staff member opens the door to her kennel to see if she will come forward and she slinks to other side to allow for cleaning. She requires coaxing to come back to her kennel and is seen back on her bed. 10/11: Sevyn is lying on her bed with wide eyes, trembling. The slip lead is tossed but she evades it, curling her lip. She stands up and begins to move around the kennel, before making herself very small and shaking in fear. She is left to decompress. Later the humanic leash pole is used to attempt to remove her from kennel. She bites the pole when it comes close to her.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Sevyn was left alone for long hours and would have accidents on occasion. She will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Handling/touch sensitivity: Sevyn is highly fearful in care and avoidant of any handling. She has escalated to biting a stranger when pet. Her previous owner reports she is not comfortable with grooming or brushing. Positive reinforcement, reward-based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards to teach Sevyn to be more comfortable with this. Please see the handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: Sevyn's owner reports she is fearful of loud noises, strangers, other animals, storms/fireworks, vet visits, and being left alone. Please see handout on Fearful. Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression: Sevyn gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Sevyn, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow her to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Bite history (human): Sevyn had a previous bite to an unfamiliar person who attempt to pet her. The bite did not break the skin. Please see handout on Bite History. Anxiety: Sevyn is reported to be anxious in the home. If Sevyn displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety.
