Shiloh is in need of emergency placement due to behavioral concerns. Shiloh has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, allowing for minimal handling. He remains highly fearful and avoidant of interactions; if given the opportunity Shiloh does attempt to hide but he has escalated to lunging and snapping at handlers. Medically, Shiloh is apparently healthy.

Shiloh came to the BACC as a stray so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. While in care, Shiloh has been intensely fearful, trembling, and shying away from handlers when approaching and seeking exit whenever he can. During an attempt at a behavioral assessment, Shiloh would not allow any handling, and when approached he would jump over objects and hide behind them. When approaching Shiloh to walk him back to the kennel, Shiloh lunges, and snaps at the handlers. As a result, we recommend Shiloh be placed with one of our New Hope Partners to help him decompress and address any challenges he may present outside of the Care Center with a reward-based, force-free trainer.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
Upon intake: While in the lobby they did not want the finder to hold them and tried to hide under furniture. They were fearful in admissions. They were trembling, holding their head down, and would not move.
Basic Information:: They are a found stray, and no further information is known.
Date of intake:: 9/16/2023
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, no known history
Date of assessment:: 9/18/2023
Summary:: Shiloh has not allowed for any handling during his stay at the Care Center. He is highly fearful and seeks places to hide. Shiloh has escalated to lunging and snapping when handlers attempt to return him to his kennel and during his medical exam. Out of concern for his stress levels and staff safety, Shiloh is not an appropriate candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 9/17/23: Due to operation limitations, dog-to-dog introductions are postponed.
Summary (2):: 09/17/23 When the handler approaches the kennel, Shiloh is standing neutrally. The handler unlocks the kennel and tosses their leash to leash Shiloh and as soon as the leash touches him, he lunges forward and attempts to bite the handler's hand. The handler attempts again and this time Shiloh runs forward snapping. The handler tries one last time before allowing Shiloh to sit there and decompress.
Date of intake:: 9/16/2023
Summary:: Fearful, hid
Date of initial:: 9/18/2023
Summary:: lunged, snapped, sedated when handling attempted
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: Due to Shiloh's potential for defensive aggression, we recommend an adult-only home. Shiloh has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has escalated on multiple occasions to lunging and snapping at handlers. We recommend that Shiloh be placed with a New Hope Partner who can address these challenges with the use of a trainer who uses positive reinforcement only.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Shiloh gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Shiloh, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow him to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
