King Ham is in need of emergency placement for behavior deterioration. He has started to bite the leash when being removed and returned to kennel, making him a handling risk. Additionally, he throws himself against his kennel door often falling on the floor. When out in the yard, and another dog walks by he has been observed to run into the metal gate and attempt to hop the fence. We fear he may injure himself should he not find placement out of the care center.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I don't always like for my food, toys or bedding to be touched. I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. It could be with you! Click here to learn more about the adoption process!

Summary (2):: 5/24/23 When approaching King Ham in kennel he is bouncing off of the walls and barking incessantly, unable to readily settle. When handler present leash he attempts to grab at it and tug it in, he is easily refocused with treats. Leashes are placed on King Ham using treats, on his way out of kennel, he attempts to cage fight, lunging and barking towards the other kennels. He is led to the play yard where he relieves himself right away. King Ham remains aloof overall, mostly sniffing and keeping to himself. He begins to lunge at the pigeons in the yard. When he sees another dog he begins to whine and vocalize loudly, pulling in their direction. After some time, he is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 5/22/23: When approached in kennel King Ham begins to jump high and vocalize. When handler presents the leash King Ham jumps up towards the leash with an open mouth. Second handler is able to redirect him with treats and continues to feed him as main handler places two leashes on him. Once removed from kennel he pulls towards the other dogs but is kept away. He is taken to the driveway where one of the leashes is removed and King Ham is then taken for a street walk. During the walk King Ham pulls hard and fixates on people walking by. At one point he stood on his hind legs and jumped towards a crowd of people. Once he is returned to the shelter the second leash is placed in him again and he is returned to kennel without further issue.
Summary (3):: 05/15: Staff let me know they were trying to get Ham out for his PM walk and he was snapping at their hand and foot holding the kennel door. They stopped trying to remove him to avoid incident and being uncomfortable with his behavior. Handler approached his kennel and Ham was upfront. Handler offered a treat which he took right away. When the handler placed their foot at the bottom of the kennel to avoid him pushing the door open he snapped towards the space similar to how he grabs the treats. When the handler put the leash in he grabbed it immediately and started tugging it in. He wouldn't release for treats right away as he would previously. After tugging on the leash for at least 2 minutes he released it enough to grab a treat handler being offered and the leash was able to be removed. Another staff member came over to distract him while jackpotting treats the leash was able to be placed on him. He tried to grab the leash once again but the handler moved it and opened the kennel so he refocused on exiting. While exiting the room he was trying to pull towards the dog but he exited the building w/o incident. While outside he was placed on a drag leash and he used the bathroom right away. He was responsive to the handler and came over for treats and pets. While standing up he sat in between the handler's legs and after a few seconds of pets, he whipped his head back quickly so the handler stood straight up and shifted away. Ham stood up and walked away. Another dog was coming back into the center so the handler leashed Ham and tried to distract Ham by asking for sits/treats. Ham did this for a second but once the dog was very close to the yard Ham started to high pitch bark and tried to run over to the fence. Once the dog was inside the leash was removed from Ham again. He ran around anxiously looking for the dog but settled after a minute. Handler sat down and called Ham over. He approached loose body and sat in between the handler's legs. Handler pet Ham off and on for a few seconds and when they stopped Ham turned and jumped up open mouth towards the handler's face. They grabbed his drag leash and pulled him away and to the side. Handler ignored Ham and Ham disengaged so the handler got up and started walking to the gate to leave. Ham was easily leashed and brought back to the center. He pulled hard to get to the other dogs while returning but once he saw the enrichment in his kennel he jumped in ignoring the leash being removed.
Summary (4):: 05/08: King Ham is at the front of the kennel starting to jump against the door when he sees me approach. He has blood stains on the door from his nail due to jumping against it. Offered a milk bone and he takes it quickly. Once done he resumes jumping so the handler shows him a treat and guides him back down to the floor. When the leash is presented he quickly snaps and pulls it into the kennel. Handler offers a treat and he drops the leash. The process was repeated two more times as he repeatedly either grabbed the leash and pull into the kennel or jumped up and snapped towards the leash so the handler pulled back to avoid injury. On the fourth attempt handler again offers a treat while King Ham is on the ground and the leash is secured on him. Once the leash is on him King Ham remains sitting and the handler opens the door. They move quickly out of the room passing a staff member who he ignores. He tries to pull/bark at a neighboring dog but keeps moving forward. Once out of the room he moderately pulls but is easily guided to the yard. In the yard, he explores and uses the bathroom. After a few minutes, he hears another dog passing and starts too high pitch bark at the dog. He is distracted by treats and once the dog isn't heard he stops. A drag leash is placed on him and the rope is removed. He comes over when called and interacts well with the handler who only does brief pets to keep his energy level down. Handler has his work on recall, sitting, and climbing onto a place. He is easily guided with treats. When another staff member brings a dog to the neighboring yard King Ham runs towards the rear of the yard and jumps off the bench into the air slamming his body against the shared steel fence. The handler calls him but he ignores it and goes to repeat the same action but the handler grabs his drag leash and moves him away. His attention remains on the fence line until he gets to the door and is now focusing on leaving. He is returned to his kennel where he pulls towards the dogs but the handler keeps him away. He goes into the kennel with no issues and the handler tosses treats in. 5/5: King ham was at the front of his kennel jumping against the door in an exuberant manner when approached. the staff were able to distract him with a jerky treat which allowed them to easily rope him. once roped he was quickly walked pass the other dogs in the room not giving him a chance to kennel fight. on his way out of the building he saw another dog and King ham began to make a high pitched bark. he continued until he was out of the building even when the other dog was out of sight. on the walk king ham had a loose body and would either pull a moderate amount or the leash would be slack. he showed no reactivity to people passed on the walk. When returning him to the shelter he was briefly kept in the yard, where he appeared to fixate on the other dog in the other yard and tense up and bark. he attempted to kennel fight when returning him to his kennel
Summary (5):: 5/2: A few milkbone treats are tossed into kennel before leashing. He quickly eats the treats and once finished jumps up for the leash grabbing near the handlers hand. He screeches passing other dogs and once in meet and greet begins pulling hard to the yard. The trainer is in the yard and he rushes up to her with tense body pushing his muzzle against her, hard sniffing her pants. He is pulls away and walked around the yard for a few minutes as treats are tossed. He is unable to catch the treats but quickly searches on the ground for them. Once relaxed, a drag leash is attached. He performs SIT reliably and takes treats politely. It begins to rain and training is brought into the yard. He is very distracted by with amount of people in the hall and is pulling every which way. Unable to focus on SIT, he is rewarded each time he checks in with handler. The trainer begins to walk down the hall creating distractions and he continues to be rewarded for checking in with handler. A staff begins to walk past the door and again he is rewarded for not reacting, and checking in. Treats are dropped over his muzzle, and he begins to catch a few. At the end of the session, he is kept on a short leash to avoid kennel fighting. He screeches in passing and a 2nd staff member throws a handful of treats to lure him into kennel. 4.23.23 For his morning walk Ham pulled moderately on his leash. Once he eliminated, he only leash-pulled mildly while he explored scents nose-down in the grass. Ears high with a still pointed tail, Ham's head turned towards every gunshot sound. Staff sat with him by ledge of ramp and his body became relaxed as he leaned into pets. 04.22 Ham was barking in his kennel upon approach. When the door was opened he lowered his head making it easier to leash him. He ran past the other dogs and left the room. He was brought outside for a walk. He walked and explored sniffing the grass. A member of the public past calling his attention. He waked past without reacting with a high tail and neutral body. He was returned to his kennel and easily unleashed. 04.14: Ham standing in the front of his kennel. He would jump up when the door was opened but was easily leashed. He ran out of the room avoiding neighboring dogs. When out in the yard he was exploring with his nose to the ground. Handler squeaked a toy and he came over with a loose tail and body. He became fixated on something on handler pants, Handler walked away to make him stop. He would continue to explore room. Handler called him over again to pet him, he leaned into petting with a loose wiggly body. Ham was offered treats but would not take them. He walked back to the gate and began to whine. He was called over again and leaned into pets. He was leashed and went right back to his kennel.
