Haley
Hello, my name is Haley. My animal id is #241961. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.
Haley is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Haley has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, remaining highly fearful and avoidant of interaction with handlers/staff, and is reluctant to leave her crate or cross through thresholds when trying to walk her out of the building, pancaking and thrashing lightly at times. Medically, Haley is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Haley was surrendered by her previous owner due to a lack of space in the home. Haley's previous family of her as a social, affectionate, vocal, mellow dog, who had a very high energy level and loved chicken and turkey treats. They did note that Haley did not have any experience with strangers and was not taken on walks due to having a yard. Haley has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has been highly fearful and avoidant of interaction with handlers and staff. She is reluctant to leave her crate at times, and can be avoidant of leashing, pancaking with light thrashing intermittently when trying to take her outside. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement through a New Hope rescue partner that can allow Haley the time and space to decompress and acclimate at her own pace. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with dogs in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary:: According to Haley's previous owner(s), Friendly and outgoing with familiar dogs. No experience with unfamiliar dogs. On/off leash are not specified. 11/30/25 Haley is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Haley approaches the male dog cautiously , displaying a still frame and a low tail. As the male dog notices her and attempts to pursue her, she becomes avoidant, running away. Due to the male dog's frustration, they are separated and returned to kennel.
Summary (6):: 12/06/25: Haley is laying down at the back of her crate but will rise and come forward as the handler approaches. Her collar is clipped with ease and the handler attempts to walk her to the behavior office down the quiet hallways but Haley will stop and baulk. As the handler takes a step to the other side, she will start walking quickly and walks all the way to the behavior office where the handler drops the drag leash for her to roam around. She is neutral throughout the session, briefly approaching handlers and sniffing them but will not engage further. She will eventually linger by the door and is returned to her kennel with no issue. 12/4/25: Haley is laying down at the back of her crate as handler approaches. She is able to come forward to the front and is leashed with ease. Along the way to the behavior room, she begins to baulk and plant to the ground while passing the main dog kennel rooms. She is able to be coaxed to continue walking when another familiar handler comes along. Once she continues walking, the second handler walks away and she is slowly taken to the behavior room. In the room, she has a tense body and low tail as she would explore around the room. She would approach the handler's to sniff them and then walk away and try to seek exit. After a while, she becomes comfortable taking a few treats. She is then slowly taken back to her kennel with no issues.
Summary (7):: 12/03/25 Haley is easily leashed as the handler approaches her crate. She remains still as her collar is clipped and she is taken to the live room. There she paces and pants heavily. The handler sits off to the side and allows Haley to make contact on her own. She slowly approaches the handler to sniff them before disengaging and pacing again. She will return again, this time allowing some pets before walking away again. The handler administers treats in which she doesn't take. Haley will then linger by the door and the handler returns her to her crate. She enters the crate quickly with no issue. 12/1: Haley was reported to refuse to leave the building for a walk. The handlers try using the elevator to bring her closer to the doors to exit, but she pancakes and begins lightly thrashing with further attempts. 11/30/25 (playgroup): Haley is sitting at the back of her crate as handler approaches. She slowly comes forward as handler opens the crate door and is leashed with ease. Haley walks with a slightly tense frame, low tail, out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). After her session, Haley is a bit avoidant of leashing but allows handler to slowly place the lead over her head when they approach and kneel down. She is returned to crate and will balk and pull backwards. She shows no interest in treats or squeaker. Handler guides her front end into crate and lifts her back end to put her in crate. 11/25/25 (Assessment Note): Haley is lying in her kennel and gets up as the handler begins to leash her. She stands at the front and exits the kennel without issue, then is escorted to the assessment room. Inside, she allows the handler to place a drag lead on her. Haley remains close to the primary handler, hiding behind them and moving between their legs for comfort. She allows the secondary handler to pet her. Haley refuses to run, does not react to knocking, and maintains a cautious, with a tucked tail throughout the session. She is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. See Behavior assessment for more information. 11/23/25: Haley is sitting in the middle of crate with a slightly tense frame as handler approaches. She backs away and handler kneels down. Haley will slowly approach to exit crate and handler slips the lead over her head. Haley walks with a tense frame to the Canine Behavior Office. Haley is slowly collared, clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. Haley spends her time sniffing around the room and will approach handlers but does not solicit contact. After her session, she is returned to kennel safely. -

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Haley be placed in a home with no children due to her high levels of fear and avoidance. Place with a New Hope partner: Haley has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety

Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety.
