Date of assessment:: 4/16/2026
Summary:: Saline was reported to have bitten the owner’s brother during an altercation, resulting in multiple puncture wounds to his left arm. The owner also noted a second incident, which she described as a “nibble.” Saline is reported to guard her toys by hovering over them. During intake, she was observed biting the leash outside—behavior the owner appeared to encourage—though she has not displayed this in the shelter. She was social with staff upon intake. However, Saline’s quick escalation to lunging and biting, resulting in multiple punctures, is concerning. Due to these behaviors, Saline is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (7):: 4/29/26: Saline is sitting at the front of his kennel and stands as the handler approaches. His tail is wagging and he lip licks and takes a treat. He is leashed with a treat and lead to the street where he pulls hard. He relieves himself. He allows body handling for leash harnessing with a treat distraction. He pulls towards a puppy on a bench nearby with a loose body. He returns to his kennel willingly. 4/22/26: Saline is sitting at the front of her kennel, neutral body. She is easily leashed with the use of a treat and removed from kennel. She walks ahead of handler to the street with moderate pull. She does not stop to sniff or interact with the handler. She will come to handler when called and take treats gently then resumes walking. She is easily returned to kennel. 4/12/26 (KSV): Saline was standing at front of kennel as handler approached. When handler stopped in front of kennel Saline went tense in body and face and ears back. Handler spoke softly to Saline and she started hard barking. Once handler moved away from kennel Saline stopped barking. 4/9/26: It is noted on the whiteboard Saline is "shy" and doesn't leash bite. 8/30/24-v Jimmy Kibble is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, one handler held a treat lure and another handler was easily able to leash him. He was taken to the play yard and into a pen. He kept on leash. He sniffed around and had a soft body throughout interacting with handlers. He would gently take treats and allow a handler pet his chin, head and back. He sniffed around and went to the neighboring fence to greet another dog. He had a soft body with a low, wagging tail. He was called and came to handler, taking another treat. He was returned to his kennel without issue

ENERGY LEVEL:: Saline is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Saline.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Saline's previous owner states that she will become tense and hover over toys in their possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Saline's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Saline's previous owner states that she will become fearful when held and when startled. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Saline would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Escalating to biting is a behavior that Saline has rehearsed repeatedly over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Saline's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Saline and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
