What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary (6):: 4/28/25: Jackie is at the front of the kennel jumping up persistently when the handler approaches. His kennel and kennel walls are painted with feces. It also coats his paws, legs, body and face. Jackie continues jumping up persistently as the handler is attempting to leash him. Treats are used to lure his head through the leash. As Jackie is coming out of kennel he spins towards the handlers with an open mouth. The handler straight arms Jackie and hold him with a short leash. Jackie continues jumping on his hind legs towards the handler. When seeing the dogs in pop up crates he begins to pull towards them with a tense body. The handler makes kissy sounds and tosses treats on the ground, Jackie is receptive to the treats. Jackie is taken to the driveway where he is highly receptive to treats. He offers the behavior sit and the handler rewards him. When seeing another dog Jackie becomes tense and begins pulling towards them. The handler is able to call Jackie away and toss treats on the ground. When returning to kennel Jackie pulls hard towards the dogs in the pop up crates again. He is easily returned to kennel. 4/26/25- Jackie is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, barking at the handler. When they attempt to leash he jumps up on the door then tries to push out then jumps up again on the door. Handler used a treat lure and after several attempts he was finally leashed. When exiting the room Jackie turns towards handler and repeatedly tries to jump up on them with an open mouth. Handler tosses treats, he eats them then again tries to jump on handler. Handler had another handler come with them for the walk. He tries to jump on handlers in the elevator. He is taken for a street walk, while in the driveway Jackie was mouthy with one handler as they tried to feed him treats. He has a moderate pull while walking the street, he relieves himself multiple times. He occasionally jumps on second handler seeking treats. He has no reaction to any stimuli. He allowed handler to pet his head, neck and back. He was easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. He would bark at handler when they walked away.

Summary (7):: 4/25/25: It is reported by staff that Jackie intensely cage fights when leaving the room and has made contact with handlers leg unintentionally, no injury; handlers legs got in the way of Jackie's mouth. 04/24/25: ACS report that when exiting kennel with Jackie she begins to kennel fight intensely. She attempts to plant her feet on the walls and kick off to reach the dogs she passes. Handler reported that while attempting to kennel fight she barely grazes their thigh while redirecting. She is also reported to snap at the leash in the elevator while handler is behind Jackie. 04/13/25: Jackie is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He tries to shove his head through the door gap to get out of kennel while being leashed. Once leashed, he pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would continue to pull ahead with his head low to ground to sniff a lot. He had no reaction to dogs or people. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment, where he would explore around the room to mark his territory and approach the handlers for treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issue. 4/12/25: Jackie is barking in his built crate in the field van as handlers approach. He had a loose and wiggly body as he continues to bark and paw at the door. Treats and a squeaky toy sound was not able to distract him. While one handler distracted him with spray cheese the other was able to leash him. He is able to jump out of the crate and he pulls frantically on the way to his kennel. When reaching his kennel room, he then plants to the ground and refused to go into his kennel. The handler tries to muscle him in and he pulls away from the kennel and had a tense body with his hackles up when he saw the dog next to his kennel. The second handler is able to belly band him from behind and he was muscled into kennel. He barks at the door as the handler locks it and walks away.

Date of intake:: 4/12/2025

Summary:: Jumping up on handler, biting the leash, reported to be friendly

Date of initial:: 4/13/2025

Summary:: More interested in exploring environment than in people

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jackie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Jackie has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Jackie has been observed to baulk when returning to kennel. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Jackie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Jackie has been observed to cage fight intensely while leaving the kennel room. Planting her feet against the wall and pushing off. While cage fighting Jackie has been observed to make contact with the handlers leg. After leaving the kennel room Jackie has been observed to repeatedly jump up on the handler with an open mouth. This behavior was not able to be redirected easily. Leash Biting: During intake Jackie was reported to jump up and bite the leash. During her stay in the care center Jackie has also been observed to snap at the leash while in the elevator. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
