Animal Profile

Wonder

Hello, my name is Wonder . My animal id is #242148. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/20/2025.

Wonder is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up significantly despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

You may know me from such films as...

Wonder appreciates attention and petting with a slow approach but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! A volunteer writes: Wonder's guardian passed away in September and he'd been waiting in the apartment since then. We don't know what his days and nights looked like, but they couldn't have been easy as it seems the last few months have really done a number on his precious confidence. Brought to us by the police, Wonder still hasn't really been found. He sits flattened like a pancake on top of his perch as he continues to watch the days pass him by. I tried to gently help him reorganize his self-imposed schedule by offering some pets and treats but alas, he wasn't particularly open to any of it at the time. We're still looking for something that will brighten his day and though we haven't found it yet, we know a forever family is right around the corner.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Upon intake Wonder was transferred straight from carrier to carrier as he was low growling and also experiencing severe distress (large pupils, airplane ears). Counselors were not concerned he would attack as he didn't attempt to swat and or bite. Very fearful benefits from slow approach.

Date of Intake: 11/20/2025

KNOWN HISTORY:: Wonder was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake Wonder was transferred straight from carrier to carrier as he was growling and hissing also experiencing severe distress (large pupils, airplane ears). Counselors were not concerned he would attack as he didn't attempt to swat and or bite. Very fearful benefits from slow approach.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/25/25 FB61 Hunched on perch upon approach, body and face tense. He hisses as I open his cubby door and he retreats immediately and spastically all around his kennel - up, down, up down, up down. I try to offer him some treats and a catnip toy but he does not settle down until I've closed his food portal. VERY nervous boy. Hopefully we can find and enrichment that speaks to him. 11/26/25 & 12/15/25 FB06 Wonder was laying on the ledge with neutral eyes and face, and forward ears. I slowly offer the scratcher and his ears flatten. He hisses and backs up into the corner as the scratcher nears him. He tolerated head and body pets with the scratcher as he was tucked into the corner with ears still flat. 12/02/25 FB61 Hunched on top of perch, body and face tense. He hisses and tries to flee as I speak to him and open his portal door - however when he sees that I am offering squeeze-ups he slow-blinks hard and pauses from retreating. He eats the treats when I close the portal door and I give him drive by treats as I make my way around the room. Will continue to build positive associations. 12/4/25 FB58 At the front of his cage crying/ vocalizing with in a high pitch and steps forward to sniff my hand through the glass. He then will hiss and back away. 12/09/25 FB61 Lying nice and relaxed in his big, comfy bed with his ears forward and his arms stretched out in front of him. He raises his head and hisses when I open his kennel door and I place some treats in front of him as I talk to him softly. He sniffs the air, however he remains tense and focused on me and he does not engage with the treats during our session. Although he is tolerant of petting I do not push it at this time to reduce stress. When I check on him later I see he is relaxed again and his treats have been eaten. He loves treats, however he is very shy in the presence of people. 12/11/25 FB20 Wonder is inside his den, he hisses softly and sniffs scratcher tool. He allows petting on his cheeks, closing his eyes. He leans against the den, laying down. He is left with a catnip toy and treats. 12/12/25 FB61 Wonder displayed similar behaviors as his previous interactions. Today he sniffed the air when offered a squeeze-up treat and remained otherwise tense and hidden in his den. He did eat the treats after I left the room (I checked back on him later to confirm). 12/22/25 FB79 Wonder was at the top part of the kennel curled up and started to hiss with flat ears when i approached and spoke. I was able to towel him and place him in a box as he growled and grumbled but did not escalate. 12/24/25 FB06 i placed my hand on the upper glass where he was crouched down at the back. Wonders ears flattened and he began to hiss. I just spoke softly to him today as he continued to his with his flat ears. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: 01/16/25 Wonder has made a noticeable level of progress during his stay in the shelter. While he intially displayed a high level of FAS, hissing with a tense face and body, ears flat to the side each time his cage was approached. When behavior staff would attempt to interact with him he would meet them with this reaction and then jump up onto the shelf remaining tense and frozen. As time went on, he would sit closer to the front and appear more curious but still present with the same reaction (hissing and airplane ears) when approach. He now appears to have settled somewhat into the shelter environment, and appears much more relaxed in his cage. When the cage door is opened, he will still greet staff with one hiss and his ears flat to the side, but is curious and responds positively to a slow approach. When a hand is offered, he sniffs and appreciates pets along his head and cheeks as well as along his back.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Wonder would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: inside of his den, Wonder sits up with his tail wrapped, forward ears, and wide eyes when the assessor bends down and speaks. Wonder has no reaction when treats are tossed in, and when the pointer tool is brought in for pets, he tolerates some on his head cheeks as well as down and around his body. However, after a few moments, wonder turns his head and snaps back at the tool as it runs down his back, he then starts to flinch/duck and dodge and the tool that was brought back to his face for pets. Pick up was not attempted at this time due to not being able to coax out of the den. 12/23/25 Wonder displayed similar behaviors during his reassessment. He no longer has a den and is tolerant of petting while hissing, flattening his ears and then getting up as if wanting to retreat. His eyes remain squinted shut throughout his assessment. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 01/16/26 Upon meeting with Wonder again, he is laying in his bed with an initial soft face and body but tenses somewhat as the assessor approaches and the cage door is opened. He hisses once with ears flat to the side. When the assessor offers out their hand slowly, he leans forward slightly to sniff and allows them to pet along his head and cheeks as he leans in and closes his eyes. When offered a squeeze up, he eats the whole tube. He also accepts pets along his back and after some time, he stands with his tail raised high and begins to approach the front, continuing to accept pets along his back, and soliciting attention as he sniffs the assessor's hand and even head bunts for more pets. Pick up was not attempted to prevent any potential escalation of FAS. Wonder appreciates attention and petting with a slow approach but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
