Animal Profile

Zeus

Hello, my name is Zeus. My animal id is #207592. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 5 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/21/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Zeus is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Although he may briefly tolerate petting on the head and cheeks, he is sensitive to touch around his body and will resort to stress meowing or attempting to swat. His response to overstimulation has not improved despite staff using treats to build a positive association with touch. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Medically, Zeus is apparently healthy.

He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. What my friends at ACC say about me: I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. A volunteer writes: Zeus is a cat with range - from crinkle balls to pouncing on bugs, he can pretty much do it all. He didn't lay his cards on the table at once when he first came in because the first time we met, Zeus picked his head up to look and just as quickly put it right back down. I know now that he was probably just waiting for the right moment. In fact, his previous family said their favorite thing about him is that he's playful (and affectionate!) Zeus plays with crinkle balls like it's a work assignment with dutiful cuddle and treat breaks. Now back to that right moment, it comes on its own time and sometimes we just have to make it for ourselves, and though Zeus is coming around, he can still feel a bit unsure. He's hoping to find a patient family who will celebrate his crinkle toy cat work and give him another chance at love.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes

If yes, Please elaborate:: Zeus was noted to have litter box issues. Zeus was in a home with 1 litter box, located in the bathroom, an uncovered litter box, with unscented, non-clumping litter. Zeus has been spraying on the walls, no other cats in the home, and Zeus cannot see outdoor cats. Zeus would have daily accidents, he would urinate outside of the litter box on the bed, couch, clothing, and furniture. No other cat shared the litter box, the litter box was not relocated, and the location of the litter box is quiet, easily accessible, and tucked away. The owner never took Zeus to the vet for this issue. The owner tried to modify Zeus' behavior by changing the litter type, scooping more often, blocking areas that were soiled, and cleaning soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/24/24: Zeus was resting on top of his den upon approach. Alert with eyes wide, starring from afar. He slowly withdraws from the scratcher tool when attempting to pet. However, on the second attempt he ate squeeze up treats from it. Zeus was hesitant throughout the assessment but with a slow approach he allows petting along his head and body. After a few strokes, he began to raise his paw while slowly retreating further. 9/25/24: Zeus is a shy, calm, and curious cat whose behavior has been consistent with the initial evaluation. He was at the front of the shelf crouched down with a neutral body and eyes, focused on the assessor with his head and ears forward. He targets the assessor's finger with his nose to sniff and a eagerly accepts treats offered. He steps forward, hovering over the front edge of the shelf, and allows petting on the head and cheeks. When stroking his body, he steps back and hunches over, appearing to be sensitive to touch or overstimulated from the interaction. When reaching around his body and briefly lifted, he tenses up, short stress meows, and stands his ground. After releasing him, Zeus walks forward, focuses on the assessor's hand, and attempts to swat but misses. After a few seconds, he retreats to the top cubby down and lays down. Zeus tolerates brief attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
