Cookie
Hello, my name is Cookie. My animal id is #217969. I am a female tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/3/2025.
Cookie is at risk due to behavioral reasons. During her time at the finders house Cookie was observed to lunge and snap at the resident child without warning. Cookie is also observed to be dog reactive, her finder states that she will hard bark, lunge, snap, and growl towards unfamiliar dogs. During her stay in the care center Cookie has been aloof and avoidant of handlers. Cookie has also been observed to pull hard towards dogs with a tense body. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily. Medically Cookie has periodontal disease.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (5):: 2/24/25: Cookie is laying down at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. She takes treats gently through the kennel bars and is easily leashed. She is removed from kennel and has her snout on the ground, sniffing out for any food. She walks slowly as she is taken to the yard for a walk. She is put on a drag leash and shakes off. She continues accepting treats and pets. Handler cues for a sit, and she complies, handler attempts to cue for a "paw" shake and she also complies. She is rewarded. When Cookie spots neighboring dogs, she becomes tense, with a high stuff tail, and stares. Handler has to pull her away to redirect. Handler keeps her away from edge of the fence and she continues to sniff the ground for treats. She is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (6):: 2/6/25: Cookie is laying at the front of the kennel, neutral. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She looks at the other dogs but continues past them. She is walked on the street where she trots ahead of handler, neutral body. She is aloof not checking in or immediately responding when handler calls to her. When she sees another dog she pulls hard in their direction and is not easily redirected or pulled away. She returns to kennel without issue. 1/28/25: Cookie was approached by a novel handler while out on a walk. She displayed neutral behavior before soliciting attention and leaning in for petting. Multiple other people approached cookie and she was social with everyone. 1/22/25: Cookie is sitting at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. Cookie is easily leashed and taken to the play yard for an adoption interaction. Cookie is avoidant of the adopter and only approaches them with coaxing and treats. When they begin to interact with Cookie she becomes tense, showing whale eye, and lip licking with a tucked tail. When handler speaks to Cookie in a soft tone she gives a briefly tail wag. Cookie is receptive to treats throughout the interaction. Cookie is easily returned to kennel. 1/5/25: Cookie is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats which she takes before being leashed and taken to the street for a walk. While outside she pulls moderately and walks slightly in front of handler during her walk. She walks past people on the street without issue but will pull hard towards dogs with a tense body. She is then brought inside the office for her assessment. During her assessment she allows collaring and leashing, she is highly treat motivated and once finished with her assessment is brought back to kennel. When reentering the room she begins pulling towards the dog kennels she passes but is kept away by handler. She is returned to kennel and interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 1/4/25: (PM): At the front neutral body. Easily leashed. She is neutral out in the yard, aloof. When returning to kennel, the other dogs are barking at her and she attempts to pull in their direction but handler is able to pull her forward and place her back into kennel. 1/4/25: Cookie is at the middle of her kennel as handler approaches. She is offered treats and takes them softly from handlers hands. She is leashed without issue and taken to the backyard for her walk. She exits kennel without issue and once in the backyard she uses the bathroom. Cookie is slightly aloof while in the yard, she enters one of the play yards and begins sniffing the ground. Her body posture is neutral and her tail points straight out and is still while she sniffs. Handler calls to her a few times but she does not react, handler then offers treats to Cookie and places them very close to her snout. She sniffs them and takes them but spits them out quickly. Cookie is walked for a while more, and walks around the perimeter of the yard without issue. When she passes dogs in the other play yards she does not react. She is then brought to medical for vaccinations and interaction is ended.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cookie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for defensive behaviors we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park.
