Summary:: According to Sheba's previous owner(s), Sheba has interacted with different dogs and is often described friendly and playful 3/14/25: Sheba when greeting through a gate with novel male dog, begins to stiffen with her tail wagging high and begins to vocalize, growl and hard bark at the gate towards the male dog. At the gate Sheba and the novel male approach with a loose frame. Both dogs scent one another. During so Sheba scents with a single paw raised. Sheba's tail wags momentarily before she walks away displacement scenting. The novel male remains present with a loose frame. Sheba doesn't return, loosing interest in the novel male. Due to Sheba's discomfort a face to face greet was not conducted.
Summary (6):: 04/09/25 Sheba is standing in front of her kennel with a neutral frame and swaying tail. Sheba is leashed as she steps forward and is taken out for a walk. Sheba displays a loose, wiggly frame while trotting alongside the handler. Sheba will take treats gently when administered and allow petting from the handler. Sheba and the handlers walk commences as she explores different parts of the sidewalk. Sheba will maintain her loose frame as she proceeds walking. The two will go on a lengthy walk where Sheba maintains a moderate pace alongside the handler. Sheba is returned to the facility where she will enter the building and her kennel with no issue. 04/08/25 (Trainer Note): Sheba is jumping repeatedly onto the glass of her kennel as the handler approaches. The glass is smeared in saliva and Sheba is panting with dilated pupils. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Sheba engages readily in the various enrichment items and begins to orient towards the handler between each item, taking a breath. Handler works with her on take a breath outside of the enrichment and the 123 game. Sheba participates readily. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 04/03/25 (PM): Sheba greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. They walked to the yard where an adoption interaction with another dog was in progress. Handler verbally assisted staff member with the other dog while keeping Sheba on the slip leash. The situation involving the adoption situation had nothing to do with Sheba, she just happened to be there. Handler and Sheba waited in another pen until a second handler arrived and took over helping with the adoption interaction. Sheba walked back to kennel without issue. 4/03/25: Sheba is observed to rebound off her kennel walls and hard bark at passing staff members during cleaning time. 04/2/25: Sheba is observed to jump off her kennel wall hard barking and lunging at the side of her kennel. 03/28/25 (Trainer Note): Sheba is standing on the glass of her kennel panting mildly as the handler approaches. Her kennel is smeared in saliva. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Sheba allows the handler to attach a drag leash and runs around the room. She shows no interest in treats so handler offers her a toy. Sheba begins to play with it, running around the room and throwing it up into the air. After she plays for a few minutes, she begins to engage with the enrichment, orienting towards the handler between items. The handler plays fetch with her for a few minutes, asking her to sit before throwing the toy. Sheba engages readily and is returned to kennel without issue. 3/22/25: Sheba is reported to bark at the corner of her kennel towards the dog opposite of her, and when being removed lunges towards the dog that is next to her when being moved out of kennel but does not kennel fight the entire length of the room.
Summary (7):: 03/16/25: Sheba is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She begins digging at the kennel door and whining as handler unlocks it. Handler tosses treats to the back of kennel to redirect her from the door and she is leashed with ease. Sheba pulls mildly to the Live Room where she begins scenting around the space. Handler offers her a licky mat which she will engage with intermittently throughout her time in the room. Sheba shows no interest in the snuffle mat offered to her. Handler sits on the chair and Sheba approaches with a soft frame, accepting petting along her sides and hind end. She will lean in to continue contact when handler stops petting. After her session, Sheba is returned to kennel safely. 03/12/25: Sheba is lying down in her kennel and will allow herself to be leashed with ease before being brought to the assessment room. Once inside, she will be fitted with a collar and drag leash and set free to roam. Sheba will be very social with handlers; however, during the “run” portion, she may begin to engage in leash biting. She will be easily redirected using a squeaker and will respond to a sit cue when prompted. After briefly pausing near the exit, she will resume exploring the room. Following the assessment, Sheba will be safely escorted back to her kennel. 3/5/25: Sheba greeted handler at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. She pulled moderately on the way out of the building. Sheba spent much of the time sniffing the environment on her way to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) No attempt to collar was made as her size was unavailable. Sheba was aloof when handler tried to gain her attention to take a photo. She did not take treats or respond to the squeaker. Sheba climbed up onto the bench. Sheba was strong and pulled harder on the way back to the care center. She was returned to kennel where she began jumping up on door as handler locked it. 03/02/25 (late entry): Sheba is sitting at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She is avoidant of leashing at first but does continue to approach the door to exit. Handler slowly drops their lead over her head, and she exits kennel. Sheba pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. She paces around the room and will shake off but does not settle. Sheba will approach second handler when called and will lean into neck scratches, but once a collar is presented, she displays whale eye and will retreat. Sheba does not show any interest in treats. After a few attempts at collaring, handlers decide to discontinue as to not stress Sheba further. She is returned to kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): due to Sheba's fearful behavior observed in the Care Center and her tolerance for minimal handling we recommend an adult only home at this time. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: shiva's previous owner reports she jumps up often or non-stop at times in the previous home. Similar behaviors were displayed during her intake. Please see handout on basic manners \ Poor impulse control. Fearful| Handling/touch sensitivity: Sheba has been fearful during her stay in the Care center, displaying conflicted behaviors during interactions with handlers. Her previous owner also stated that she is fearful of loud noises like storms, Thunder, fireworks, and arguments. She Will bark / growl when startled. She will initiate petting, but then backs away and or bolts with whale eyes when attempting to dress her with a collar. It is important to always go slow and give Shiba the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or submit to any petting or handling. Please see handout on decompression period and handling/touch sensitivity. On-leash reactivity / barrier frustration: Sheba is reported to become reactive to bikes, skateboards, scooters, and small animals such as cats, squirrels, and birds during walks. She'll react by barking. She also displays similar behaviors when strangers approach the home/yard. Please see handout on on leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
