Neo

Hello, my name is Neo. My animal id is #225136. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Neo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. In his previous home Neo is reported to have a multiple bite history. Neo's previous owner states that he is very mouthie and will jump up and mouth people on their arms and hands, sometimes with hard pressure. The most recent bite incident, Neo was jumping up on the owner and mouthing them. Another person when to assist with getting Neo off them. They grabbed his collar, Neo then redirected onto the person and bit them on the arm. This bite was a bite and release that left a puncture that bled. Due to his multiple bite history Neo has not been handled by staff during his stay. Medically Neo is apparently healthy.

Date of assessment:: 4/22/2025

Summary:: Neo arrived at MACC following a bite incident. The owner reports that Neo has five or more bites in his history. On the morning of April 20th, the owner was in the living room when Neo came towards them. Neo began to become increasingly aroused and mouthy. Neo then began to mount the owner. Their child got up and verbally corrected Neo, he was not receptive and continues mouthing. The victim then grabbed him by the collar to pull him off. Neo was not easily removed, he then become more aroused and redirected onto the victim. This bite was a bite and release that resulted in a puncture that bled. The victim was able to place Neo in his crate and then sought medical attention at NYC Health and Hospital. The victim states that whenever people visit Neo will jump on them and mouth their arms and hands, sometimes with hard pressure. The owner reports that the last bite occurred on the18th. The first severe bite left scratches and scars. The second severe bite left four puncture wounds and caused bleeding. The other bites were reported to be not as “aggressive”. During intake Neo was observed to hard bark, lunge and jump up continuously. Neo was reactive to the dogs passing by, he would hyper fixate on them and bark at them. With his owner Neo would mouth their arms and hold it. Noted to “latch his mouth on the owner’s arm”. Neo would add pressure while mouthing and would go from one arm to the other. The owner was not able to redirect this behavior. In kennel, Neo has a neutral body and is not receptive to treats. Due to the bite incident and the noted mouthy behavior, Neo is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 4/21/25: Neo is sitting at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler speaks in a soft tone, Neo does not seem receptive and continues to have a neutral body. Handler offers Neo a treat and he sniffs in thoroughly before taking the treat with a soft mouth. He then places it on the floor of the kennel before looking up at the handler again. Handler offers another treat and Neo does the same previous behavior. Handler ends interaction. 4/21/25: Neo is standing in between his owners legs with a neutral body and is fixated on handler approaching. He begins to hard bark and retreat further behind owner. Handler hands over leashes to secondary owner, they are placed on Neo and handed back to k9 Behavior. Neo begins to walk forward and has a tense body whilst he head whipped briefly and whined. He did not escalate and was secured in kennel.

Date of intake:: 4/21/2025

Summary:: Hard barking, lunging, mouthing and holding onto owners arm

Date of initial:: 4/21/2025

Summary:: Tense body for exam. Tolerated tasks.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Neo is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Neo.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the multiple bite history we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Neo's previous owner states that he will become tense and hover over treats, random objects and stolen objects. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Neo's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Neo's previous owner states that he has destructive tendencies in the home with items such as furniture, shoes, and the walls. Neo will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Neo's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Neo's previous owner states that he will take treats with a hard mouth. They also state that he is extremely mouthy and will jump up and mouth people with pressure. Neo should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop mouthing and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive/ Handling Sensitivity: Neo's previous owner states that he will bark, growl, snap, bite, and lunge when held/ restrained. He will snap when pushed off of furnitures. He will also bark, growl, snap, and bite when his collar is grabbed or touched. It is important to move slowly with Neo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Please see handout on handling sensitivity. Multiple Bite History/Bite History (Human)/ Arousal: Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Please see handout on Arousal. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Neo's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home and will become anxious when left alone. They also state that he barks a lot. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Neo's previous owner states that he will lunge towards small animals, and strangers. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Neo's previous owner states that he will jump up and bite the leash during walks. We recommend walking Neo with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Leash Pulling: Neo's previous owner states that he will pull hard on leash. We recommend walking Neo on a harness. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
