ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 09/12/19 Crouched in back of kennel, body low and tense. Raises head when cubby door opens and hisses, ears flat. Tolerates petting along head and body with the scratcher tool while turning head to sniff it curiously, then focusing back on me. Ate all greenies given. Nervous but tolerates interaction – may have potential to warm up. 09/13/19 Curled up in the center when approached, ac will retreat into the litter box when the kennel door opens. Tolerated all petting by the assessor, but remained uncomfortable and would focus on the scratcher when pet along back. Still needs more time to adjust. 09/15/19 Lying in back of cubby, body relaxed and ears forward upon approach. Eyes are closed and arms and legs are stretched out. He tenses up as the kennel door opens and focuses on me, hisses. Tolerates slow and gentle petting with the scratcher while flattening ears, then curling tail around body and shifting weight. Backs away in an effort to avoid further interaction. Sniffs treats offered, then eats them after I’ve closed his cubby door. Nervous – needs more time to adjust. May benefit from clicker training. 09/17/19 Lying in back of kennel, body and face tense. Makes eye contact with flattened ears when spoken to, then hisses and lowers body as cubby door opens. Eats treat offered so I click and reward each time he makes eye contact. Not ready for petting and doesn’t lean forward to sniff my hand. Very nervous. Will continue to clicker train.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Ac has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ac was shut down and distant during her assessment. She will remain low and tense in the back fo her kennel when interacted with, when pet she will lean away, hiss, lip lick and avoid eye contact. She is timid, but tolerant of petting. Ac tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter.She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
