Pre-Screener Form

Farmer is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns displayed in care as well as in his previous home. Farmer has shown high arousal and poor impulse control in the care center, frequently leash biting, grabbing handlers clothing items, and attempting to mount or nip during handling. He can be redirected with treats or toys but quickly begins to do the same behaviors afterwards, making it difficult to handle him at times. Medically, Farmer is apparently healthy.

Farmer came into the care center as a stray he has spent time in foster. In the foster Home, he is noted to be very friendly and playful, seeking a lot of attention. Loves to approach and rest his head down on people or jump up and prop his front legs on them. While in foster care, he exhibited destructive behavior in the home and showed reactivity toward both dogs and pigeons. He was also observed biting the leash, a behavior that has continued during his stay at the care center.He responds briefly to redirection with treats, but quickly returns to leash biting behavior, making it difficult for the handlers to walk him. He would do best with a New Hope partner experienced in impulse-control and redirection work, offering enrichment, decompression, and positive reinforcement-based training to help him succeed outside the shelter environment.

When inside, Farmer was clipped to a drag leash and the handler noticed he had almost entirely chewed through his harness. Farmer allowed the handler to change his harness with no issue and remained loose and wiggly throughout. Farmer was able to engage in several decompression loops of LATTE, and then got distracted. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Farmer so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Farmer's arousal, we recommend that he be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: We reccomend Famer is placed in a home with no small animals. Recommend no dog parks: Due to familiar dog selective behavior, we reccomend no dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Farmer came into the care center as a stray he has spent time in foster.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: While in foster care, Farmer was noted to urinate indoors when left alone, including on the floor and on pads. He also urinated when the foster parent was briefly unavailable (e.g., in the bathroom). These incidents suggest possible separation-related anxiety or incomplete house training, and may benefit from structured potty routines and gradual alone-time training. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior:Farmer has shown destructive tendencies when left home alone, including chewing and damaging household items such as remotes, pillows, books, and personal belongings. This behavior may stem from anxiety or boredom and could be addressed through crate training, enrichment activities, and increased physical and mental stimulation. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Anxiety:Farmer displays anxious behaviors in the foster home, which may be contributing to both house soiling and destructiveness. A consistent routine, calming enrichment, and gradual desensitization to separation may help reduce his anxiety. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration:Farmer has been reactive toward other dogs and pigeons during walks, often stopping, staring, and displaying heightened arousal. These behaviors suggest barrier frustration or overexcitement, and may benefit from counterconditioning and focus-building exercises. Please see handout On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration. Leash-Biting / Strength / Leash Pulling: Farmer pulls hard on the leash and has been observed biting the leash during walks. These behaviors indicate poor leash manners and impulse control. Training with appropriate walking equipment and reinforcing calm walking behavior will help improve his leash skills.Please see handout on Leash-Biting / Strength / Leash Pulling. Social Hyperarousal: During his assessment, Farmer was observed to jump on handler and toward the leash with an open mouth. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Farmer to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Farmer. Please see handout on Arousal.
