Animal Profile

Juan Carlos

Hello, my name is Juan Carlos. My animal id is #251493. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/7/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.

Juan Carlos is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Juan Carlos tolerates some attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter and displays some avoidant behaviors. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home with an appropriate decompression period, and positive reinforcement for social behaviors with high value treats. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/11/26 FB06 Juan Carlos is hidden under his bed as I opened the door. Using the scratcher, I slowly lift the bed. He tenses ack towards the back wall, his eyes are wide, face tense, ears flat and low growling. Offering him the scratcher, he gently sniffs then swats as he continues to growl. He dodges the first attempt at petting by moving to the opposite corner. As I attempt again while he is in the corner, he tolerates some scratches as he is still growling. His ears remain flat and his body is trembling. 4/14/26 FB58 Laying and resting along the side of the main area of his cage with his bed partly over him. He hisses multiple times as he backs away with a low body. He hisses as he is pet with the scratcher tool and is tense but allows touch/pets on his head and cheeks. He stops hissing at some point before he jumps up onto the shelf and begins to low growl with a tense face and body. He does seem somewhat interested in the tuna in water offered to him in a tray but does not eat in front of me. 4/16/26 FB79 Juan is inside of his bed with a relaxed/neutral body when I lifted the kennel cover; however when I started to unlock the door he hissed and his eyes widened. I greeted him as I enter the kennel which he hissed to once again but he remained still in his bed. I spoke and slow blinked at him but he just lip licked and looked around the room behind me. When I attempted to toss in treats near him he tensed up with his shoulders hunching in and his back slightly arching up. Juan continued to hiss when I would speak and tossed some treats down for him. 4/22/26 FB61 Huddled next to cat bed, body and face tense. He makes and maintains eye contact as I open the kennel door and he flattens his ears completely as I reach towards him with the scratcher tool. He swats is hard and lowers himself further, eyes squinting and blinking hard. There were two separate groups of community kids in CAA today along with me socializing and a volunteer, so I can see that contributing to his level of tolerance towards interaction today. For this reason I am postponing updating his evaluation. If these behaviors continue, he should receive a new eval.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Very high energy level,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Previous owner indicated that Juan Carlos takes time to warm up to strangers and is a somewhat fearful cat. It should be noted that he came from a home with 16 other cats which may limit the amount of direct socialization to humans, visitors, and handling. Eduardo is a young cat that may not have been socialized enough to humans from an early age. He may be slightly apprehensive of people and sensitive to high traffic environments, but the behavior team believes with some additional socialization and an appropriate decompression period, he has a lot of potential to fully warm up to people. His previous owner notes however that when comfortable, he enjoys having nails trimmed, coat brushed. Unbothered by being picked up or held. Juan Carlos is an active young cat who would benefit from increased mental and physical stimulation to appropriately direct his energy. We recommend using fishing pole-type toys as they allow for vigorous and stimulating exercise. Puzzle feeders will also keep Juan Carlos engaged and exercise his brain in addition to his body.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Due to showing signs of FAS in shelter, and requiring a longer period to warm up - the behavior team recommends Juan Carlos goes to a home with no young children under the age of 13 to provide him with an environment in which they can appropriately acclimate/be socialized. He is noted to be shy, timid, and curious with children - previously live with at least one child of unknown age. Counselor discretion is advised, based off of interactions with the child/children in the home. Juan Carlos may benefit from being in a home with an older, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom he can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help him gain confidence and comfort in a new environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Juan Carlos is sitting on the shelf with a slightly hunched body, face and body tense, eyes wide and dilated, and ears forward. He tenses and stands when the cage door is opened and his ears flatten as the tool is offered out to him, lip licking and looking around as if to flee. He then quickly jumps from the shelf and into his body, sitting in a tense and loafed position with eyes wide, ears tilted, and tail wrapped tightly. The assessor then offers the tool again and is able to pets along his head and back as he remains tense and lip licks throughout. He is tolerant of pets with the scratcher tool and the assessor's hand along his head and back, particularly along his cheeks - but does not lean in. Pick up is not attempted and he shows no interest in treats offered.
