Animal Profile

Jasper

Hello, my name is Jasper. My animal id is #248819. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/3/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Jasper is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Previous home details are not currently available.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/7/26 FB79 Inside of the den, Jasper has hunched in shoulders with wide eyes when i lifted the den cover his hisses harshly with a tilted ear and turns away from me facing the back of the kennel. When i run the tool down his back he snaps back hissing once again and begun to low growl until i lowered the den cover and closed his kennel. 3/8/26 Vol. Jasper was in his den. I removed the cover and saw he was at the very back of the den. I spoke to him and offered treats, which he did not show any interest in. As I spoke to him, he dashed out of the den portal and went up on the perch. I spoke softly to him but did not attempt to pet him. I put a toy and the treats near him. He remained crouched up at the back of the perch, looking fearful. I ended the interaction and he remained on the perch for a few minutes. I then heard him jump down and go back into his den. 3/10/26 FB06 Jasper is pressed against the back of the den with wide eyes and a tense face. I offer him the scratcher and he starts looking around for a way to run. As I move the scratcher inside the portal and touch he body he hisses and swats the scratcher. 3/13/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. He does not respond when spoken to or as the kennel door opens. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy and end the session. Hopefully he explores the offerings later when he feels more safe. 3/14/26 FB79 Jasper was inside of his den when i lifted the den cover and he sat with his paws straight out, forward ears that lifted when i spoke and his tail out of sight. However when i brought the tool in very slowly he tensed up and pulled his head back to avoid contact. I attempted petting once more and he tolerated a cheek rub before hissing quietly at the tool. 3/16/26 FB61 Hiding in cat den upon approach, body and face tense with his pupils dilated, ears flat and tail wrapped tightly around his body. He is tolerant of petting from within his den while flinching and remaining completely still - eyes avoiding me for the duration of the interaction. I leave him some treats and a catnip toy that he will hopefully explore later. 3/19/26 FB61 Displayed similar behaviors as previous sessions. 3/24/26 Appears to be displaying defensive aggression that may be exacerbated by not being able to see what/who is approaching. He growls when the cage door is opened, and when his den portal is closed he lunges, swats, and hisses. When the assessor opens the lifts and removes his den cover, he lunges a few more times with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. I sit and speak to him slowly and he eventually loafs with a tense body and wide eyes but is no longer hissing or swatting. I leave his den cover off and place signage on his cage.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of the den, Jasper is out of sight but can be heard hissing when the kennel door is opened; when the den cover is lifted he is hunched towards the back with wide/dilated eyes and his lift ear tilted. He had no interest in the treats that are tossed in and when the pointer tool was slowly brought in for him to sniff he turned away facing the back of the den then harshly turned hissing and swatting at the tool when it made contact down his back/body. Jasper lip licked and turned away from the assessor once again and very briefly tolerated petting on his body again before striking the tool once again. Pick up was not conducted at this time. 03/30/26 FB61 Jasper was hunched in his cat den as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his ears completely flattened. Jasper began striking his den door as soon as the assessor opened the kennel, his eyes wide and body low. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Jasper is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. Jasper does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
