Tilly
Hello, my name is Tilly. My animal id is #221038. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/21/2025.
Tilly is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Tilly in care is struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Tilly barks, heavily pants, and jumps at her kennel door incessantly throughout the day, and does not settle. Tilly is social and affectionate with staff, but is struggling in the kennel environment. Medically, Tilly is apparently healthy.

She was understandably overwhelmed by the shelter environment initially, but she's been gently unfolding here, showing us glimpses of the loving, playful dog she's ready to be. Tilly shines in one-on-one time. She loves snacks, leans in for affection, and responds beautifully to gentle guidance. Out of her kennel, her energy softens-she gets the zoomies, offers polite sniffs, and lets herself enjoy the moment. She's a sensitive soul, and new things can be a little overwhelming at first, but with a patient, calm environment, she warms up quickly. Meet Tilly at Queens ACC!

Summary:: Due to Tilly entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Tilly, however, was retrieved with two other medium mixed breed dogs. Two male dogs. 04/30/25 Tilly is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Tilly will ignore the novel male dog as he approaches the gate. When coaxed to the gate, she scents the novel male dog but is aloof, walking away. She seeks attention from the handler present, avoiding the gate. Tilly is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 02/23/25 Tilly is introduced to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Tilly will display an exaggerated approach as she lunges forward at the gate in which the novel male dog stood behind. Tilly prey bows along with hard barking and snarling. As the novel male dog remains still not reciprocating any form of reactivity, Tilly will scent him through the gaps in the gate. With her hackles rose, she walks away, exploring away from the gate. Tilly is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

She is leased using a treat and taken to the Live Room where she takes treats very gently and immediately engages with a licki mat and spray cheese. Tilly initially has difficulty engaging with the other items, but after some encouragement, she is able to find the treats in the puzzle toy and is able to focus on it. Tilly is encouraged to use the snuffle mat and slowly learns how to engage with it. Tilly is able to orient to the trainer periodically, and can focus more as the session progresses. Tilly is easily leashed and is taken back to he kennel.
Summary (7):: 04/17/25 (Trainer Note): Tilly is laying down in kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. She is loose and social with staff, leaning into contact. Tilly engages readily in the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler between each. She is led to the mat where she engages readily and is able to sit and then lay down, holding her down for slowly increasing duration. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 04/11/25 (Trainer Note): Tilly is laying down in kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Tilly shows no interest in treats, but holds a toy and leans into contact. She is returned to kennel without issue. 03/22/25: Tilly is heard barking, and scratching at her kennel door and the handler approaches she is barking, heavy panting and pacing. 3/18/25: Tilly greeted handler at front of crate and was leashed with ease. She walked to the live room where she immediately veered towards a snuffle mat. Tilly spent time searching for every last crumb in the room. She was highly social and displayed a loose frame while playing with toys. Tilly particularly liked playing with a rope toy with tennis ball attached. Tilly was returned to crate with ease. 02/22/25 (assessment): Tilly is standing at the front of crate with a neutral frame as handler approaches. Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During Tilly's handling assessment she began to Resource guarding the assessor toy she bite the dummy hand with mild pressure, tense body hovers, body blocks. To address Tilly's resource guarding, start by teaching her the "drop it" cue using high-value treats. Practice taking objects from her gently, rewarding her each time she releases the item. Please see the handout on Resource guarding On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Tilly will Barks/lunge when dogs pass her crate. art by exposing her to other dogs at a distance where she remains calm, rewarding her with treats for non-reactive behavior. Gradually decrease the distance over time, always rewarding calm behavior. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
