Summary:: Sadie is tolerant of having her harness and collar removed with the help of some high value treats. She is easily collared but uncomfortable when handler attempts to adjust, giving whale eye and becoming avoidant. Once she is let off leash to begin her assessment, she begins running the length of the yard, zooming back and forth, seeking an exit. Handler is able to interrupt her intermittently, but she will return to the zooming back and forth. She is tolerant of touch on her body, but will startle easily with quick movements, freezing, closing her mouth. She begins to leash bite as handler starts the jog. They decide to end the assessment due to her stress levels. A quick toy guarding test is done and Sadie grips the toy firm and moves away.
Summary:: 11/1: Sadie lay down as a F LMB dog approaches the gate. The F LMB dog is pulling to approach, alert barking and her hackles begin to raise. Sadie is quiet waiting and when the other dog gets to the gate, she begins hard barking.
Summary (1):: Sadie is very active, playful, social, and affectionate. She spends most of her time wherever people are, as she loves being around others and especially enjoys being close to her person. When it comes to grooming, her experience is unknown, as it has not been attempted due to concerns with impulse control and aggression. She is rated a 4 for leash walking, meaning she pulls hard and is quite strong, making her somewhat difficult to manage. She is walked 3–4 times a day for approximately 45 minutes each time. Sadie has never been crated and has no crate experience. During car rides, she absolutely loves them! She knows several cues, including “sit,” “lie down,” and “over.” While on walks, she also understands “go around,” “left,” “right,” “straight,” “let’s cross,” “off the lawn,” and “not your house.” Her previous owner’s favorite things about her are how sweet she is, how clumsy she can be, and how she loves to chase the broom while they sweep. They also love how deeply she bonds with her person and how much she enjoys sleeping with or on them. Sadie's favorite activities include going on long walks, although she is not very good at jogging because she still tends to jump up on you. She loves playing with her ball and stuffed animals, especially her Kong Knott bear. Her favorite treats include Zuke’s training treats, Blue Buffalo beef-flavored training treats, and Smart Bones with three different types of meat wrapped around them.
Summary (7):: 11/3: Sadie was leashed and taken out by a familiar staff member. As she walked down the hallway and passed a second staff member, she began barking and repeatedly turned back to look at them. Sadie was then taken for a walk by both staff members, with the second staff member maintaining some distance behind her. Throughout the walk, Sadie remained vigilant, frequently turning her head to look back and stopping to stare at the second staff member. She also stopped and stared at people walking across the street but was able to be redirected with a treat. At one point, she lay down on the grass while waiting for the second staff member to approach; however, the staff member continued to maintain their distance. On the walk back to the Care Center, the second staff member moved ahead of Sadie, and she displayed more relaxed body language. 11/1: Sadie is avoidant of the slip lead, but with a few tries, she is secured. She walks out of the kennel, remaining close to handler. They go on a walk, and Sadie pulls mildly with a soft body. She checks in with her handler and will jump up on them, soft-bodied. She is easily redirected, shows interest in treats but is picky. When walking back to the building, a volunteer walks up from behind them. Sadie alert barks and is vigilant of him until he stays back and the handler creates more distance. When walking into dog holding, another staff member is in the middle of the room past her kennel. She splays her legs and freezes before entering her kennel. 10.29.26 Sadie is at the front of the kennel and barks as a staff member approaches. She stops barking when staff opens the door and is easily leashed. Sadie is easily walked out of the room and is taken for a walk. On the walk, Sadie has a soft body and pulls a mild-to-moderate amount. She walks with a soft body and occasionally will turn, look at staff, jump against them with a soft body, before continuing to walk. Sadie is reactive to people who approach, barking and pulling towards them, but recovers once they are out of sight. Sadie will just stare at people across the street. Sadie allows staff to clip her leash and is easily returned to the kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression, reacting to unfamiliar people on leash, becoming easily aroused and mouthy with pressure reported in her previous home, an adults-only home is recommended for Sadie. No cats: While in her previous home, Sadie would lunge and snap at the cat in the home. We recommend she does not live with cats. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Sadie is reactive to other dogs on leash and through a barrier. Based on behavior seen in care and reported by the finder, we recommend she be the only pet and does not visit the dog park. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: In her previous home, Sadie was reported to have occasional indoor accidents, a few times a week. The finder states she can only hold it about 6-7 hours at this time. Establish a predictable toileting schedule and reinforce outdoor elimination. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Destructive behavior: In her previous home, Sadie was reported to occasionally chew unattended household items while otherwise able to settle. Provide appropriate chew items, enrichment, and positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the Care Centers, Sadie displayed moderate difficulty regulating during off leash interaction: pacing, jumping up on staff, leash and grabbing at her leash, she needed structured breaks and active reinforcement to settle. Please see the handout on Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In the Care Centers, Sadie showed moderate defensive behavior when an unfamiliar person approached: stiffening, barking, growling. She required increased distance and time before resuming interaction. Avoid forced greetings. Please see the handout on Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: In the Care Centers, Sadie displayed moderate anxiety in unfamiliar areas: repeated zooming back and forth, and difficulty settling, seeking an exit. She required additional time and environmental support to relax. Please see the handout on General Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Sadie is reactive on leash and will hard bark, growl or lunge towards large dogs, cats, small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.), small dogs, strangers that approach you/family members. We have seen this on-leash reactivity towards staff members, alert barking. She is able to recover when given space. Sadie is treat motivated and has been able to resume the walk with staff if they keep some distance. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity. Leash-biting: Sadie is reported to bite the leash while on walks in her previous home. We have seen her playfully bite at the leash during interactions as well. She has been easy to interrupt with treats. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
