Kuro is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, he has stage II Periodontal Disease.

Litter box training: Kuro had access to 1 covered litter box and used non clumping litter. Energy level/descriptors: High Other notes: Kuro enjoys having his coat brushed. He will growl, struggle and squirm when having his nails trimmed. He will struggle and squirm when being picked up and held. He will struggle, squirm and swat when being placed in a carrier. Kuro is generally withdrawn, fearful, and prefers to observe from a distance. He had access to indoor areas and spent most of its time in the bedroom and at the window. He engages in rough play, including biting skin, extending nails, stalking and pouncing on feet, and chasing bugs or moths. He enjoys playing with water and receives interactive playtime multiple times per month. He likes to scratch on cardboard and carpet/fabric. The previous owner noted that the cat enjoys pets and chin rubs, playful activities, and sometimes cuddles on their chest. However, the cat has several behavior issues, including a dislike for dogs, biting people, scratching furniture, and rough play. The cat eats wet food, specifically Friskies and Fancy Feast, and prefers dental treats and Churu as treats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/17/24 Kuro was in his den on approach. As the staff member attempts to close the door, he swats hard. As she continues to push the door closed and he sticks his head out the portal and hisses at her with hard eyes. 09.24 Kuro was in his den upon approach. The door was opened and he poked his head out of the den swatting and hissing at staff. A stick was used to close his den and he began to bite at the stick. The den was closed and removed from kennel to clean he began swatting at the small hole on the side of he den hissing. When attempting to open his den door he swatted and hissed. 10.01 Kuro is in his den when shorline is lifted. He pokes his head out of the porthole and hisses lunging and swatting towards staff. HIs den is closed in order to service his kennel. He is swatting and hissing from inside his portal. When finished his portal is opened back up and he again hisses and swats towards staff.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Kuro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Other: He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Kuro has had multiple bite/scratch incidents in the home to both animals and people. We are unsure what provoked these incidents.

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home,No dogs

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kuro is at on top of his den with with dilated pupils and not blinking. He was offered slow blinks and looked back not blinking. hen going to unlock kennel Kuro spit and swat. The scratch tool was introduced he immediately swat and hissed, hitting the scratch tool hard. Interaction was ended there to reduce FAS. Kuro is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and scratch is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
